NEW: I saw multiple copies of the email, none of which mentioned the termination part. If you have more information on this, please get in touch! notadoctor.news/2025/02/22/w...

As the U.S. abandons foreign aid, an urgent conversation is starting among governments, philanthropists, and global health and development organizations. It is centered on one crucial question: Who will fill this gap? www.nytimes.com/2025/02/22/h...

There is a person who emails me every time I publish on a certain topic. Always scrupulously polite (which is important). They ask me if I’ve considered reporting on a certain angle, and (perhaps most importantly) they send links to new studies and articles from other journalists. 1/

NEW: The new spillovers in Nevada and Arizona cows are making experts rethink how H5N1 spreads to cows — with implications for how to contain it. My latest: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

Great piece by @adamserwer.bsky.social. Reminder that this isn’t the first time the federal workforce has been resegregated: Woodrow Wilson’s 1913 order to impose Jim Crow rolled back almost half a century of progress that saw Black people working at every level of the federal government.

I don't know how any American parent can ever again look their kid in the face and honestly tell them not to let the pigeon drive the bus

FOLLOWUP: SECDEF Hegseth also firing the CNO, the USAF Vice-Chief, and somewhat unusually and ominously to do in the same breath, the senior JAGs of the Army, Navy, and USAF

Things hurting the US economy: -mass layoffs of federal workers -funding cuts to every federal dept -corporate layoffs -measles and tuberculosis outbreaks -high flu rates -$8/dozen eggs -new tariffs raising the cost of everything -Canada boycotts US travel and goods -concerns about airplane safety

It’s not just probationary employees being terminated. Also, I talked to an employee who was at CDC for 4.5 years, notified they were probationary and let go. +Probationary isn’t like private-sector probation for performance. It just means they don’t have the same legal protections for their jobs.

I don’t know why this is hard for folks to understand. The layoffs aren’t just about probationary employees. They are going beyond that. It won’t stop. It’s all about making agencies non-functional.

If you have any news or insight into this, please get in touch.

All of the CDC’s public heath fellows, who are deployed to state, territorial, and tribal governments, were told they’re being laid off. But some never received termination letters, so they can’t even apply for unemployment. “The whole process has been dominated by chaos and confusion.”

NEW: Judge Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee, DISSOLVES the restraining order that was preventing the administration from placing thousands of USAID employees on leave and DENIES a preliminary injunction halting further purges. A painful blow to the agency. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Y’all might want to point out to friends, family, acquaintances, communities that people who have aspirations that their children attend college/university, esp in STEM, will not have colleges & unis for them to attend if this assault on funding the scientific enterprise persists.
