This is not a surprise, it's how capitalism works.

Incredible how much ignorance these people display. Just everyday general knowledge. Probably goes with narcissism.

Presumably George III was a colonialist. Did you mean colonist?

The sovereignty argument never made sense to me. In or out, agreeing to be bound by treaties that are in the UK interest *is* exercising sovereignty. The only way to remain fully sovereign then is presumably never to exercise your sovereignty, Mr Garage?

Surely it's only humiliating for Johnson et al who worked so hard to damage the country?

Ah... Too late, I'll be blocked then.

Don't start that again, you idiot Hannan.

This should be a statement of the bleeding obvious. Please, Americans, make it stop while you still can. When you condone the removal of others' freedoms, you lose your own.

To be fair, it's only most things he does for personal enrichment. Sometimes he's just being cruel and vindictive.

Correction they *aren't* saying it could be done better...

Good point. Make them say they don't believe in fairness. Because that's what it means. They are saying it could be done better. They don't want to do it at all.

Not being complacent, isn't there always a big protest vote at by-elections & locals? It would be a disaster if Reform were to be biggest party & not congruent with perceived high level of disdain for Garage? What does the science say? As to Tories - prob depends on who succeeds Badenoch & when.

Good for Starmer. I wouldn't take any nonsense from those two chancers either.

Vance is a cycle path. The sooner he's on his bike, the better.

Perhaps Trump's insurance policy is having a VP who is potentially as bad as he is?

And had Biden done it, the Republicans would have been leading the clamour to send for the white coats.

Like St George. I thought briefly some national pride might be good. Then remembered my first visit to the USA, being bowled over by the sheer pride they have in their country, all that saluting the flag and singing Hail to the Chief at school. And what they have done to their country since.

Utterly baffling. I mean, he can't be an actual halfwit can he? He's PotUS, and the GOP it seems will follow him anywhere. They wouldn't genuflect to a halfwit would they? Does he just think nobody in the the world is as clever as he is? Still doesn't explain the GOP...

If Labour retreats on climate, it will alienate more voters than it attracts. Most people want climate change to be taken seriously.

Here in Hertfordshire voting is always tactical if you don't want a Conservative, to which can now be added Reform. The beneficiaries here are the Lib Dems. I can only see tactical voting becoming the default as the electorate polarised & who you *don't* want becomes the dominant concern.

The empty vessel who leads this shower is responsible for the UK leaving the EU, which is costing us billions, and most now think we should rejoin. I hope these protest voters will reflect on that.

Have already deleted USA from putative travel plans. Was eyeing Romania fly-drive. There'll be nowhere left to go on holiday at this rate. How long will we have the luxury of such 1st world problems? 40% Trump approval is a record low. But still a lot of people & Fox is the top 'news' channel.

That's why people buy national lottery tickets.

What a berk. Economies do not prosper on strategic uncertainty. USA is the last place to invest in production facilities so long as that obtains.
comment in response to post
I agree. The SC might have been decisive but they have solved nothing by militating an unworkable, unfair outcome.

Trump would be a peril for a start. Sad that it should be the first thing that occurred to me.

Where's the pork pie?

Spot on. Marx got that bit right - the surplus goes to capital. None of the so called wealth creators would make a bean if they were left on their own on a desert island. Their wealth comes from Earth's resources and from society as a whole, which deserves its share of said surplus.

I presume you would never write something like "increasingly more fraught"?

It seems rather foolish of LVMH to invest in US manufacturing on the basis of anything trump did in the last couple of weeks, if that is what is implied.

Best he isn't. He could take the Catholic church back 650 years and nobody would be expecting it.

Yes, we had a dud as well but we only elected her once and her party colleagues were sufficiently appalled and ashamed to boot her out after 49 days. Republicans, do your duty, be on the right side of history.

That's my working assumption Arthur, in complete fairness I haven't been there and obvs never will:)

Can a centibillionaire even fit the definition of Christian? There are no self made billionaires. It's theft when they won't pay tax. Stick one in the middle of the Sahara and see how much money they can make on their own. More likely that a camel will pass through the eye of a needle.

Online socialising can add to mental stresses especially for younger people (is my instinct - I wonder if evidence supports this?) I'm not sold on the idea that online interaction is a good substitute for face to face, one to one interaction. It certainly doesn't work that way for me.

Concerning for all of us. "People who are more socially connected to family, friends, or their community are happier, physically healthier, and live longer, with fewer mental health problems than people who are less well connected." www.mentalhealth.org.uk/explore-ment...,

Tell them we need to think about it. For about 45 months.

Press and TV are almost always useless with stats. They should all be made to listen to More or Less. Podcasts are doing some excellent interviews now, Today should take heed.

Same reason I don't go to see the pyramids. I know what they look like, I don't need to check. Austria - very scenic. Yorkshire Dales - lovely. But craters? It's people that matter anyway.

To foresee the likely return on negotiating with Trump it's only necessary to know that his aim is always to screw the other party. He has no concept of mutual benefit.
comment in response to post
What Trump is doing is extortion. I don't think we need to poke him gratuitously, but a dignified silence should be maintained. On no account should we drop standards, we're going to need them to agree terms with better people than him.
comment in response to post
We should match the tariffs on principle. We do not have a meaningful trade surplus with the USA AFAIK. If a bully hits you, you hit them back. If we take their stinky chicken we won't get what we need from the EU, a bigger trading partner.

What are the chances of Trump outsmarting Xi? Place your bets.

Look at what happened last time, what little growth there was, reversed. He was trammelled then, now he is off the leash, surrounded by nodding donkeys. Who would be confident to invest when Trump is so unpredictable?
