A lot of professional misinformation āinfluencesā and āalternative scientistsā start out with experiences where they feel like they found a better path outside of medicine backed by scientific evidence.
I think we need to do a way better job of catching people before they are too far gone.

Something that probably will be lost here in interpretations is you saying āprofessionalā. I see that as people promoting ideas that lead to harm for profit and personal enrichment.
Very different from people who are everyday skeptics/scared. Professionals prey on normal curiosity and ignorance.

So many places are scared of saying ādiversityā, but arenāt scared of future problems coming from this moment. Many institutions were quick to throw away diversity language the past few months, when they are in cities with 30%+ African-American residents. If representation does not matterā¦

Even if the goal (in bad faith) was to rebalance the portfolio of grants, cancelling existing awards was always an insane idea.
Not only are you wasting the time of the researchers, reviewers, and study participants. But you create an incredibly unclear target alongside a hostile environment.

To be clear, Judge Young is ruling that the NIH terminations were neither "reasoned" nor "reasonable" based on the legal standard previously set forth by the Supreme Court for reviewing agency actions (e.g., terminations) under the APA.
This is very good for plaintiffs.

Oof, a brutal exchange for the defense.
The judge asks if they can point out a single grant that is used to "support unlawful discrimination," as the NIH alleges in its termination letters.
The defense says it can't.

I like this idea. Descriptive analysis is important, but freeing up scientists (and training) time to pursue complicated questions is a future that I would love to see.
Would probably also help the discussion on framing how we measure āimpactā.

Probably some combination of both, maybe even expanding character limits so you can get a little more context on if a submitter knows what they are talking about.

Many institutions are pleading to the government and other funders, trying to highlight that the work they do saves lives and is impactful. Public campaigns that do that w/o emphasizing the topics that are disproportionately losing opportunities will have an impact on the support of those topics

In this attention environment, visibility of work really matters! Places tell people they support the work of people in topics that are under attack, but if you are doing that behind the scenes while parading others (who get opportunities because of visibility), that creates more disparities.
