There's disruption and chaos in government agencies trying to deal with the #H5N1 #birdflu outbreaks in cows, but bird flu doesn't care. Another new dairy herd infected in Nevada, the state's 8th and the country's 973rd. www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-po...

The more I’ve dug into certain COVID conspiracy theories, the more I’ve realised that some of them are being inadvertently fuelled by perhaps well-meaning but flawed ideas about covid immunity in wider coverage. New post: kucharski.substack.com/p/a-zombie-s...

Here is a brief thread on this preprint from @virusesimmunity.bsky.social's group studying a volunteer cohort of people with self-reported "post-vaccination syndrome", recently covered in the NYT. I think there are a few reasons to be skeptical of the headline takeaways of this preprint.

I hope that other rich countries take swift coordinated action to provide support for the WHO, USAID and other programmes (e.g. distribution of anti-HIV drugs) left unfunded by the DOGE vandals.

Shocking but perhaps, in retrospect, not that surprising - turns out the Minister canned all social science and humanities research funding **because she just didn't like them**

At this point we have to be asking if a social scientist ever kicked Judith Collins' dog or something similar

Good thread on the difficulties of pinpointing exactly when pandemic interventions brought waves under control (and why it still really matters what happens after infections have peaked)

When it comes to false claims about vaccines and autism, it was never really about the wellbeing of the population and whether vaccines were safe - fundamentally, it was about whether the alternative could be profitable to the people promoting nonsense:

Some answers to my question about what would trigger use of #H5N1 vaccine being purchased by Canada. #NACI, the advisory group that recommends vaccine policy in Canada, has issued preliminary guidance on how/when to use H5 vaccine in a non-pandemic context. www.canada.ca/en/public-he...

Measles virus is extremely contagious. It acts as the canary in the coal mine, it tell us vaccinations are under the level required to avoid preventable illness and death. Collectively we seem to have forgotten how bad infectious diseases were.

An excellent effort to get the voices of scientists heard throughout the country 👇👇👇

"This feels like the early days of the pandemic, except there's less I can do about it", a colleague told me yesterday. Yep. One thing you *can* do is outreach. My sense is that the majority of the country doesn't yet understand the scale or the stakes of what is happening. We have to tell them:

Here’s some positive H5N1 news for a change: conditional approval for poultry vaccines made by Zoetis for chickens. Why didn’t we do this sooner? The answer is more complex than you might think. www.science.org/content/arti...

Friendly reminder that feeding raw meat to your pets has no proven benefits, and is full of risks. This is especially true as we see growing numbers of cats suffering from raw diet associated H5N1 infections.

On January 6th, 1995, my (now ex) wife and I boarded a flight from Heathrow to JFK on a one way ticket. We had two suitcases and about $900 in cash - this was everything we owned and we were moving to the US. We thought it was maybe for 2-3 years. I had visited the US once, for a conference, and

Third detected spillover from wild birds to cows in the US, this makes me think the virus might also be spreading in cows in other countries that aren't testing

1. It's Friday, which means FluView. Let's take a look. This has been a very full-on flu season — the worst since well before the #Covid pandemic. #CDC says 2024-25 is now classified as a severe flu season, the first since the very bad 2017-18 season. Red arrow this year, blue arrow 2017-18.

Also because of the times in which we live- if you have ever had a question about the HPV vaccine, I probably covered it here (and if I haven't please ask me in the replies and I will do my best to answer or find someone who can answer) #medsky #pedsky #immunosky #episky #IDsky 🧪
