An update from @ESBNetworks says over half a million premises are without power now and restoration of power will take days. #StormÉowyn

The jet stream is currently blowing across the Atlantic at speeds that are at least 100km/h faster than normal - and it has supercharged Storm Éowyn, writes Environment Correspondent George Lee

Knock Airport has recorded gust of 156kmh in last hour. Some station reports are missing from the 6am reports. #StormÈowyn

All 32 counties now have a red warning as the UK Met Office have upgraded Northern Ireland to red also! A very rare event. #StormÉowyn

Donald Trump's sweeping pardon - which went further than his allies had signalled they expected - drew condemnation from police who battled the mob, their families and politicians, including some of the president's fellow Republicans

The overnight charts for #StormÉowyn are concerning as the high resolution models show damaging gusts across the country and this could be the worst storm we have seen in years. More later.

“The DC Police Union wishes to express its dismay over the recent pardons granted to individuals convicted of assaulting police officers during the January 6, 2021, riots at the US Capitol Building.”

Many parts of USA and Canada are in the freezer today! A lot colder than Europe for sure.

In Ireland no party has a majority - so after the election some parties come together and agree a program for government - a compromise between what the individual parties wanted - this evening the members of my party are gathering to discuss it before it is approved

This billboard says it all.

#Breaking US President-elect Donald Trump would have been convicted for his alleged effort to overturn the result of the 2020 election if he had not been elected four years later, according to a special counsel report. www.rte.ie/news/us/2025...

Let’s hope the EU gets its defence act together. Mind you, I live in Ireland and am one of a tiny minority who believes we should give up our neutrality and join NATO or an EU alliance.

JUST IN: U.S. payrolls grew by 256,000 in December, much more than expected; unemployment rate falls to 4.1%.

It was unusually cold in Ireland, with lots of black ice. We parked our car on the driveway of a family member - only for it to slide down by itself and get wedged between the entrance pillars 😩 It took a creative tow truck driver to dislodge it!

Maybe the USA should become the 11th province of Canada

Great letter in today's Guardian. What sort of free speech is prevented by factchecking, Zuck?

* The Big Snow of 2025 on the Galtees * Brothers Tom John William & their nephew Billy Cunningham along with their Hill Sheep Farming Neighbours are out on the Galtees with the last few days digging out their sheep who have been trapped in what has been the worst snow fall in decades.

The EU has rejected a claim by the head of Meta that the bloc is engaged in "censorship" because of its technology regulations

Greenland, which US President-elect Donald Trump wants to annex, is a self-governing Danish territory covered in ice, with untapped mineral resources and geostrategic importance

The Verge - Meta’s policy changes allow calling gay and trans people ‘mentally ill’ while removing a ban on referring to women as ‘household objects.’ www.theverge.com/2025/1/7/243...

Make it make sense.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation from the role

Noon on Sunday and rain, sleet and snow continues with some heavy falls at present. Still many areas only seeing rain. As the system pulls away later today more areas will see sleet and snow followed by the freeze.

Happy new year from Dublin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack was 'deliberate' and not a coincidence, adding: 'What could be more inhuman?' www.ft.com/content/b7b2...

Happy Christmas

I don’t know who made this but great job

He owes €190,000+ in fines to the State,he remains on full pay of his teachers salary (from the State) as he’s appealing his dismissal and we paid for everyday of his stay in Mountjoy. As well as being obnoxiously hateful to LGBT people, the Burkes cost us lots of money!!! www.rte.ie/news/courts/...

This has been clear for many months. If Putin wants to negotiate, he can stop fighting anytime. And negotiate. He is the obstacle to peace, not Zelensky, and has been since the beginning of the war. Still not heard Trump explain what leverage he will use to make him stop

Gisèle Pelicot ‘never regretted’ going public as ex-husband sentenced to 20 years, and 50 others guilty in mass rape trial’ A shred of justice delivered for the bravest of women - may her ex husband and the other rapists rot in jail #patriarchydestroyswomen www.irishtimes.com/world/europe...

"Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil." Thomas Mann

Interesting that Carlson asks "why am I required" to hate Assad. But nobody is "requiring" him. it's just that normal people, with what used to be normal American/Christian moral values, find torture and mass murder repugnant. He does not. And he also does not want to feel bad about that.

"One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn't require religion at all." Arthur C. Clarke

Reindeer are an exception to the rule that only males have antlers. Males will normally shed theirs before Christmas, females after winter. Thus, Santa’s helpers are likely female! (Or castrated males but in sympathy I go for the female story). Let’s start a campaign: rename Rudolph into Rodolphina😜

“Just under half of Britain’s very highest paying jobs were located in London 30 years ago. Today that figure is almost 75 per cent.” Remarkable stat from @jburnmurdoch.bsky.social in this excellent column on our unbalanced economy. www.ft.com/content/eb02...

Fears are growing in the Welsh town of Holyhead that its busy port may not reopen next week, as images show the extent of the damage sustained during Storm Darragh.

We MUST keep vaccines. have you written your Senator to let them know?

This year's RTÉ Toy Show Appeal has raised over €5 million with people at home and abroad donating in record numbers to help children and their families across the island of Ireland

Thanks for sharing. I live in Dublin but as I was born in Tilburg it will always be my “mother” town😀

There has been a rise in cases of influenza and high levels are expected between Christmas and the New Year, according to interim Chief Medical Officer Professor Mary Horgan.
