Pretty big fire burning in NI yesterday and last night. Jones Road Fire.

Here’s my OpEd from this morning regarding the need partnership and therefore for SB540: calmatters.org/commentary/2...

I would just note that this bill and the Pathways Initiative that it will implement are a tremendous example of what can happen when California and other western states - of all political stripes - work together to solve common problems.

California's SB540 (Becker) - the bill to enable creation of a regional day ahead electricity market for the west including California - just passed 17-0 out of the Senate Energy and Utilities Committee. That's a very good start for a bill that will improve reliability and affordability in CA.

Schrodinger's visa indeed.

Over on X, a tale of the madness currently playing out with student visas is currently going viral on the basis of an astonishing quote from a judge calling what the Trump administration is doing “Kafkaesque.” The lawsuit is one of Banias. law’s emergency TRO cases and the quote is from 5 days ago.

A handful of states, including VT, have statutory economy-wide GHG targets on the books. Changing how GHGs are accounted for to create the appearance the state is on track when in fact it may be falling short defeats the purpose ... insideclimatenews.org/news/3103202...

Howdy folks, As the most of the data and tools used by the office are currently no longer available, services provided by the Office of the Texas State Climatologist will be drastically impacted to discontinued due to the laps of federal funding for the NOAA Regional Climate Centers.

If that’s not contempt of both the District Court, the Circuit Court and a 9-0 Supreme Court ruling, I don’t know what is.

One of the most satisfying aspects of my work at Stanford the last few years has been helping research scientists to bring their scientific work to application and scale. One of our first projects. news.stanford.edu/stories/2025...

To paraphrase one of my favorite books about commercial fishing - “those aren’t MWh’s you’re buying, those are men’s lives.”

Power plants exempted from mercury rules that also catch fine particles (because mercury sticks to the particles so you catch the Hg by catching the PM2.5).

California needs a long term plan to manage refinery industry consolidation and land cleanup and reuse. This is inevitable as the EV transition plays out. We can show the way forward. But we have to think about more than short term gas price impacts. www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

This is shocking. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/16/u...

After the #LAWildfires, what did we learn and what still needs work? On April 17th at 12:30pm, @michaelwara.bsky.social will break down California's policy response and the challenges ahead as #ClimateChange fuels more extreme #wildfires. This is an important step forward. All sides are now acknowledging that legislation is required to extend cap-and-trade. And that cap-and-trade is central to the state's climate policy. www.gov.ca.gov/2025/04/15/g...

I rarely call Congressional offices, but this is different — so I just contacted Rep. Foushee, Sen. Tillis & Budd. If you grasp the stakes of our present Constitutional crisis, you have a responsibility to speak up & urge your reps to make it a top priority.

Utility corruption gets the HBO doc treatment tonight. Featuring the utility that bribed its way into billion-dollar bailouts subsidized by people’s electric bills. Good day to appreciate @cleantechfacts.bsky.social for all his work to document the saga in real time. youtu.be/dykZuyO7RUU?...

Great detail on the market tensions created by Trump. “Make America Great Again” has quickly become “Sell America.” It makes this American very sad; and very worried for our future. We are headed down a dangerous path, particularly given our demographics. adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-...

Interesting story in Calmatters about the CPUC fire threat maps prepared by utilities. I'm with the CPUC commissioners who voted against requiring mandatory updates. Here's why. calmatters.org/economy/2025...

Quake and (wild)fire following quake are the two cat risks this Californian just can’t handle. Wildfire on its own is hard enough.

A M5.2 earthquake occurred near Julian (San Diego County) in southern California. Shaking was felt 115 miles to the north in CGS' downtown LA office. Felt aftershocks are possible. CGS is monitoring this area. #earthquake #julian”

If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks can’t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until they’re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.

I love the Owens River Gorge. Especially the Upper Gorge. Family spring break climbing expedition with kiddo on lead and mom on belay.

No.

You can’t have cheap electricity and lots of coal fired power. The only way to increase coal fired gen is to either shut in Nat gas (how?) or sell so much LNG to other countries that Henry Hub price approaches Asian and European. Good luck with that. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/c...

Yucca coming back to life in the Bridge Fire burn scar. This plant experienced high intensity fire on September 8th.

Went on an incredible hike today in San Gabriel Canyon through the Bridge Fire burn scar with my 13 yo and then we did this. Strong recommend.

The coolest people at these meetings are cultural burners and ranchers. Got to learn all about what you can do with cows and “virtual fences” from a rancher. He has his herd dancing around his 7k acres doing fuels work and then bopping over for more nutritious forage. Literally on a 2h cycle.
