Looks like an excellent selection! The Han Kang is brilliant. Alice Chadwick's novel is on my to-read list!

Thanks! It would be the skill of the writer and of the translator, they usually go hand in hand.

Sounds really interesting! One of my struggles is contract negotiations. I wish I could have my own model contract and not have to keep explaining why I want to assert my basic moral and intellectual rights over the work. And I wish publishers would offset translation grants against the advance.

Don't get me started on mortgages and banks! Or estate agents for that matter.

Oh I agree, Anton. Of course we don't do this for the money but the financial stress is very real. Every time you have to call a plumber or even just the basic costs of living these days.

So there is still a long way to go in educating people about the realities of life as a literary translator (or writer) and how hard it is to make ends meet. We're part of the precariat.

Success seems to be people coming up to me to tell me I'm successful. And unpublished Dutch authors approaching me to translate their work. Actual work wise, no one is offering me better terms or amazing commissions. It's still the same old hustle and painful contract negotiations. ->

Angelo Tijssens' debut The Edges is coming out in English on 30th January (Daunt Books) and it's a stunner. #booksintranslation
