In my field, the parasitic Cordyceps fungus has horrified but intrigued millions through a single piece of footage from David Attenborough. This means that funders know what it is, and are willing to spend money in research, and labs benefit. (Also, I'm willing to bet the Last of Us exists because)

Beyond science literacy being a good in itself, there's also the practical reason of funding; money in science is scarce enough as it is, but if your subject is unknown or too "fundamental" (i.e. not with immediate applications), good luck.

Somewhat recently on an urban ecology tour (here in Belgium), one of the participants specifically talked about your book with regards to her change of mind of pigeons, so it's definitely reaching!

particularly in fields like biology and astronomy, where data is relatively easy to collect by a layperson. Replies here are very bitter, from pure capitalism ("to get views/money") to amateurism ("they tend to be wrong"). Science can't exist without engaging the masses, you need pop science.

I'm surprised at your point 3: as an example, citizen science has seen a *huge* uptick over the past few decades, which is part technology, part accessibility, but absolutely part pop science. There's good examples of citizen science improving the world around us -
