Ooh, lab meetings are a thing at DOGE (minus the resignation piece) 😮

The Pope is in critical condition due to a"polymicrobial infection” of the lungs. What is this? An infection caused by multiple “germs”, most likely bacteria given the severity of the condition. One of many examples on why microbiology research matters. www.livescience.com/health/virus...

A break in the chaos to enjoy the beautiful science published in #AppliedAndEnvironmentalMicrobiology this month. Let’s dive into the articles I selected for the Spotlight❗️ journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Aw, man! We’re so close, folks! SO CLOSE!

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

Check out the February issue of the @asm.org journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology - out now! Featuring a beautiful cover illustration by author Karl Persson. Read the issue: journals.asm.org/toc/aem/91/2

On non-science news, yesterday I attended the first and last concert of Spanish beloved singer, songwriter and poet, Joaquin Sabina, in Chicago. And it filled my soul with warmth and hope. Much needed in these troubling times.

We got a Costco membership for the first time in our lives today. They asked why & I said because treat your workers well, you value diversity, & you didn’t cave in to authoritarian demands. He said: “We’ve been getting lots of folks saying that, thanks for joining.” Who needs a gallon of ketchup?

This was my first year in the committee for elections to the American Academy of Microbiology. I can only tell you that a lot needs to be done. There are good intentions but the actual process defeats the purpose.

Let’s talk about DOE: “Going forward, the Department’s goal will be to unleash the great abundance of American energy required to power modern life and to achieve a durable state of American energy dominance.” PS: The DOE-BERAC Spring meeting has been postponed. www.energy.gov/articles/sec...

Congratulations to the virus and bacteria communities on the confirmation of their longtime supporter and champion Robert F. Kennedy Jr as secretary of health and human services.

Whenever drug companies justify their high prices, they tend to claim a need to recoup their huge investment in developing that drug. The story of one drug that costs more than $2M for a single dose exposes the truth about who is paying to develop the world's most expensive medications:

Proud & energized to be co-chairing the @agu.org Biogeosciences DEI committee w/ Emily Cardarelli, following the excellent leadership of Jesse Bateman & Maya Almaraz. We are organizing a listening session for Feb 19. Keep an eye out for email. DEI is alive & well in the biogeosciences community !!

On #InternationalDayofWomenandGirlsinScience let me remind you that we are NOWHERE NEAR parity. A few examples. 1. Women are credited less in science than men. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Proud mentor alert!!! (Morgen is one of the best graduate students I have mentored.)

With all that is happening around us, it feels appropriate to share this Editorial I wrote about the inclusive model of editorial board membership I implemented in #AppliedAndEnvironmentalMicrobiology. It has been a success. Prioritizing DEI works. doi.org/10.1128/aem....

#Microgem #7 "We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek." — President Barack Obama

So Senator Cory Booker is the social media strategist for the senate Democrats. And he delivered “a Powerpoint presentation” with his plan. So academic of him. 😂

Week 2 – We knew it was coming.
