Postdoc alert!! Rolf is an amazing advisor and Zurich is a great place to live. Send your best students this way! ⬇️📢 #MicroSky 🦠❤️

Safe to say I had a pretty nice first experience of fieldwork yesterday 🌞

Evolution of gene order in prokaryotes is driven primarily by gene gain and loss www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1... #jcampubs 🌊

New tenure track assistant professor position in molecular microbiology in our department @dmf-unil.bsky.social @unil.bsky.social! We are casting a wide net for an experimental molecular microbiologist. Apply here: wwwfbm.unil.ch/releve/appli...

I'm happy to announce the latest release of the GlobDB, available at globdb.org. The GlobDB is a database of "species dereplicated" microbial genomes, and as of release 226 contains twice the number of species-representative genomes (306,260) than the latest GTDB release.

An interesting WYMM conference with #nanopore - worth it for the socks 🧦 (And I know clinical is where the money is but it’d be nice to see representation of all the other research and uses that are being done with the technology 🙏 ) Long-read micro conference anyone? 🦠 🧬

🚨 Very excited to finally say… 🚨 The story of Noodlococcus - the contaminant that started ContamClub - is available to read 📖🍜🦠 Check it out ➡️ doi.org/10.1101/2025... 1/15 🧵

It’s Pride Month! We’re celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community and their ongoing fight for equality. Last year, Irish Division & Members Panel member @guerrinomacori.bsky.social‬ shared a blog on why this month matters: microb.io/3X7vsAJ 🏳️‍🌈 #PrideMonth #LGBTQIA

Very happy with this little lab I set up! Successful week of whole-genome and metagenomic sequencing (except for the mysterious patch on the second which I’m sure wasn’t a bubble…) 🟩 🟩 🟩

Group photo day 🌞

Great to see this announced into early access - lots of fiddly complex stuff - it is peptide fingerprinting in a single molecule counting manner and will open up for sure some workflows that are not so easy to do in mass spec (and just to say - I love mass spec for protein id/abundance as well)

Very excited to present the Great Barrier Reef Microbial Genomes Database (GBR-MGD), a comprehensive DB of 1000s of high-quality prokaryote, virus, plasmid, and chromosome-level eukaryote MAGs using Nanopore long reads. Subthreads incoming. Please share widely. 🙂 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... Autocycler, the automated successor to Trycycler from @rrwick.bsky.social has a pre-print out - overall, pretty awesome performance (and is very easy to use) github.com/rrwick/Autoc...

“The visa fees are so exceedingly high that it makes coming here very difficult for some people. We are fishing for the best scientists in the world. They want to come and work here because we are such an effective country at science, but if we have these high costs, they can and will go elsewhere.”

So happy to be able to finally share this story: Can pathogens degrade plastic? Yes (some!) Does this impact virulence? Yes Read the full story below: www.cell.com/cell-reports... #microsky

First, first author paper! 🥳 If you are interested in using @nanoporetech.com adaptive sampling and how chemistry updates might affect data (or just want to know a good DNA extraction kit for metagenomic samples) then give it a read! 🧬 environmentalmicrobiome.biomedcentral.com/articles/10....

Unique investigation of some errors in long read assemblers. In particular these remarkably chimeric contigs are 😱, if rare.... Improving long read assemblers is definitely the space to be in when it comes to the future of metagenomics, as short reads won't be part of it 😉

New postdoc position in our lab (2 y+): evolutionary genomics of integrons and MGEs with focus on vibrio-phage interactions. Great environment @pasteur.fr for science, career building. Super collaborators @celineloot.bsky.social @amazeld.bsky.social @fredoleroux.bsky.social 3 weeks to apply!

2 PhD and 1 postdoc positions, deadline April 15. Will shortly add the third advertisement. #phage #microsky #Mevosky #STEMjobs

0.1% of people are scientists… yet contribute to 2% of plastic waste globally 🤯 #MicroBio25

Very sad to not be attending again this year, this is really my favourite conference 😢

Very proud of where I did my PhD, and nice to have a small cameo looking at my favourite thing (sequencing data) 🧬 youtu.be/bl8kyEECWTU?...

📣 Exciting opportunity! We're hiring a #postdoctoral fellow in #gutmicrobiome research to explore the activity and function of the gut microbiome in situ and its regulation by the immune system.🦠🔬 Post based at @sotonbiosciences.bsky.social Apply here 👇 jobs.soton.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx...

Do you (like me) create a bunch of conda environments, then later forget what they're for, when they were last updated, or which tools are in them? If so, you might this little project: github.com/rrwick/conda...

Update: we 3D printed our own and it cost about ~50 CHF including the magnets 😎

BIG day for the Schölmerich Lab 🥳 🧬 @nanoporetech.com

We would love feedback on a new NCBI-BLAST service we are launching today: sky-blast.com Under the hood it's the same BLAST executable and databases provided by NCBI, with a replica of the NIH's interface - providing an alternative to the US gov service that's less congested, faster & more reliable

This is really cool ‼️

"Behind every great woman in science, there’s another great woman in science" www.nature.com/articles/d41... Prof. @hortenselef.bsky.social, Prof. Sierin Lim, lovely to see you both in this feature. Keep inspiring! #WomenInSTEM 🧪

Don’t suppose anyone has tried 3D printing a magnetic eppendorf holder (like DynaMAG)? I really don’t want to pay £700 for a glorified magnet 🧲

Roche SBX preprint out www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Happy 37th birthday to the LTEE! the-ltee.org/history/

Name a more iconic bridge. I'll wait.

Really chuffed to say today was my first day in my new position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Environmental Microbiology Group at ETH Zürich! 🇨🇭 🎉 Watch this space for some really cool projects! 🧬

Lots of new PhD opportunities in microbial genomics: 🌽 Soil microbiome functions for sustainable agriculture with @szytynska.bsky.social 🦠 Microbial Influences on Pseudomonas aeruginosa Phage Susceptibility with @jojofoth.bsky.social 🧬 Phage characterisation with @proffballoux.bsky.social

We have a fully funded PhD studentship to work on engineering bacteria to degrade food associated plastic waste #microsky Deadline: Feb 3rd www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

Prize for most creative and coolest viva present is this coaster from my PhD pals: It is a broken MinION sequencer that was broken apart and made into a COASTER!! ☕️

First post on Bluesky and I thought I’d announce: I passed my PhD viva, massive thanks to @KennethWasmund and @McCarthy_Ronan as my excellent examiners but bigger thanks to my amazing group and in particular my supervisor Prof Sam Robson! 🧬
