This is my exact thought with the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown. It was originally intended to be a trilogy; the first 3 books were amongst the best that I had read in a while. I forced myself to finish the fourth and I think I got abou 1/2 way thru chapter 3 of the 5th.

A few years ago my wife and I were on a cruise. We met an older couple from Omaha, Nebraska. When they found out I was from Toronto, the wife asked if I knew JP, I said I've heard of him but don't agree with his teaching. She looked at me with disgust and said "oh", and that was it for the week.
