Another way of understanding #MapProjections. Note Mercator (lower right). #Maps #Geography

There are more than 60 known archaeological sites in this view of town, left by 500+generations of Secwépemc ancestors. Tk’emlups/Kamloops been eminently liveable for millennia🧡

Alrighty, so, since a lot of folx suddenly want to discuss Indigenous peoples a couple of reminders: * capitalize the “I” on Indigenous; * don’t talk over Indigenous peoples. If you listen you can learn more; * you having a relationship with an Indigenous person and using that to silence another /1

I was going to say that we need some Academic Aunties to get them to smarten up, but 1. The Aunties are tired and overworked; time for men to hold each other accountable 2. By the way they dismiss or are outright aggressive and disrespectful to Indigenous women, they won't listen to the Aunties

I wish there were more critical conversations about community accountability & non-local Indigenous people taking up space/speaking over local Indigenous people. I'm finding myself disheartened tonight by some academics who act like they're above accountability just because they're Indigenous. 1/

This is a good day for a gentle reminder that you can mute words and hashtags, even just for a temporary break for your own wellbeing. I'm trying to remember that I can curate my social media experience here, so I don't need to completely disappear as I'm trying to rest & heal.

So, it seems some of the app settings are attached to your device, not your account. My phone bricked itself last week & I'm slowly coming back here again. I had mine set to require ALT text before & had to reset it again on this device. Settings> #Accessibility > Require alt text before posting

Does anyone w/ a shaky foundation in their #Indigenous #language flip-flop b/w dialects? I read a lot of words in the eastern dialect, but I speak most words in mine (western). ... And if I read a written word out loud I stumble over both 😂 (and some words I 'hear' in my head in the northern)

Stop paying academic keynote speaker thousands and then ask the directly impacted folks to present their trauma stories or lived experience as a keynote for a small honorarium, a $20 gift or for free! Lived experience is valuable, you wouldn't be asking for it, if it wasn't! #equitablepay

Still relevant. Sometimes when I've got writer's block, I'll just write an ancestor on the whiteboard and circle out from them. After filling the board with relations, I'll deliberately erase it; I let myself be comfortable knowing they'll still be there whether their names are written down or not.

The #CulturalAppropriation never ends... Wayfair selling a " #NativeAmerican #Indigenous Wigwam Shelter Cardboard Standup" ...for "up to 70% off!" What a steal... What even is this??

Some of the last of the hand-painted wood feather earrings for the year. With the postal strike and some health issues, I couldn't have them ready before XMas, but I enjoyed making this batch.

Looks like the wet coast is in for another series of storms over the holidays. No snow, but potential for power outages. #BCWeather #BCStorm

❄️🧪🧵 In late fall through winter, ice sometimes grows into wild, gorgeous, and unusual structures variously known as frost flowers, ice ribbons, rabbit frost, hair ice, ice wool, and needle ice. Delicate and ephemeral, they're often found in forests. 📷 Wikimedia + Flickr (details in alt text)

FINALLY. Imperial metals spilled 25 million cubic metres of tailings (~10,000 Olympic swimming pools) and most of it is still sitting at the bottom of Quesnel Lake. It’ll take decades more to even understand the impacts. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

“Hunter-gatherer” doesn’t actually describe how most civilizations related to production. “Hunter-gatherers” engaged in millennia of selective plant breeding & advanced landscape stewardship, which created wildly productive perennial gardens & managed hunting grounds www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Friday the 13th is looking pretty rough for the coast, weather-wise. #BCWeather #BCStorm

Canada’s commitment to reconciliation is ONLY allowed to be on Canada’s terms. This is nothing new on their part. It’s embarrassing and disappointing ca.news.yahoo.com/canada-block...

The public health system in Canada continues to attack Indigenous people in every way possible. Criminal assault charges would send a strong message. Revoking licenses to practice would send a strong message. But, to date, Canada is too racist to send a strong message.

Gonna’ pin this here.

Another good example of how #maps can distort our perception of the world. #Geography
