@libbyheeren.bsky.social Happy birthday, Libby! Have a wonderful day!!🥳

I just created a starter pack for mesocarnivore ecologists. If you’d like me to add you please let me know and share here what species you are working with or have worked with!! 🦝🦦🦡🦨 🌎 go.bsky.app/JdVaf5H

When I was 12 years old, I wrote to @stephenking.bsky.social telling him that I wanted to be a writer just like him. I didn't become a novelist, but I do horrify readers with medical history. Every time I write a book, I send him a copy hoping, as I did as a child, that he may someday see it.

When people I care about show me AI-generated Studio Gihbli-style pictures, I tell them the truth. They don’t know but Miyazaki was famously disgusted by AI. This is breathtakingly disrespectful. They’re shocked. They didn’t know & want nothing to do with it. It just feels wrong. Because it is.

I liked the 1st episode of the new season #blackmirror

when even the worst people are horrified....

The reason Trump has slapped tariffs on the entire world is not to protect American workers. What Trump cares about is being able to get concessions out of other countries and corporations that seek exemptions. It's all about his ability to hand out punishments and rewards.

The best kind of cycling infrastructure? An absence of car traffic. Any road or street without car traffic is usually a great place to ride a bike. This road outside Oslo has been permanently closed to car traffic. It’s one of my favorite places.

Column by @geoffreyfowler.bsky.social: If you’re one of the 15 million people who shared your DNA with 23andMe, it’s time to delete your data. The genetic information company declared bankruptcy on Sunday, and California’s attorney general has issued a privacy “consumer alert.”

An astoundingly well-preserved 3,400 year-old ancient Egyptian wig made from human hair! Worn by a lady called Merit, it was placed in her tomb for use in the afterlife. I saw this remarkable artefact last week at the Museo Egizio in Turin. 📷 by me #Archaeology

Very much this.

Jessica from Census truly was great, and hearing about an org dedicated to backing a move from SAS to R/Python and the cloud (securely) was really cool. The hangout attendees really hit it out of the park with their questions today #databs #dshangout

Join me (and over 100 other data nerds) today at 12pm US Eastern to have a casual chat with Jessica Klein from Census! This is gonna be such a good one, y'all, Jessica is super fun and FULL of helpful wisdom. Add our call to your calendar by clicking the big blue button: posit.co/data-science...

NEW RESEARCH: Team uses Twitter data to examine how urban highways are an impediment to social contacts. (Now do it with Bluesky.) www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

OBSERVATION: Tesla ownership has recently become what Audi ownership has long been—a predictor of anti-social behaviour. My wife came home from a walk in our neighborhood and told me she'd had run-ins with two Tesla drivers, acting aggressively in intersections.

Meanwhile scientists studying cancer and funding an entire small business employing multiple scientific workers on a one million dollar grant (or half that), after a profoundly competitive, deeply scrutinized, public and years long expert led process, is "waste"

This, I am sorry to say, is now a good question in the US. www.vox.com/podcasts/401...

DOGE recommends cuts to the FAA. Hundreds of workers get fired, including those tasked with producing air traffic navigation maps. Now Starlink is reportedly in line to take over a $2 billion contract to upgrade the nation's air traffic control systems. See how this works?

Wealth ≠ Worth

A Disney worker lost his privacy—and job—when hackers struck after he downloaded an AI tool. His experience is a cautionary tale for companies—and individuals—of how vulnerable they are to opportunistic hackers.
