1 more point on literacy: it's a disaster that the inner workings of the US government are incredibly complicated and illogical (filibuster, reconciliation, Electoral College, etc). parliaments work better bc dipshits can pick a party that sounds good and see that legibly translated into outcomes

I’m much more sympathetic to the Jedi side of the civil-military relations crisis at the center of Episode III this time around.

NY machine dems haven’t had to actually fight or win for two decades. They have functionally evolved into an island of flightless birds

the logical demand at this point, I think, is for a constituent assembly

Right, why should blue state governments pay sinecures for traitors doing their best to destroy American liberal democracy?

If you're still working at the ADL after this, I pretty much have to assume that you agree with it.

You could see a lot of this in the New Left in the 70's and 80's - the massive push to ban fertilizer exports to developing nations under the explicit goal of (1) forcing organic agriculture and (2) controlling population expansion through limiting food supplies.

Well, if you know a good tailor, then getting men’s trousers (with ease) altered is also a reasonable option. The fabric content/mill sourcing is usually better that route, but it’s more of a pain.

J. Crew is also practically canonical for business/collegiate style, but Talbots is also good and might have stuff that resolves the Clothing Trilemma (reasonable cost, not polyester, not made in a sweatshop)

Nobody has normal politics anymore, it's always like "free healthcare, UBI, eradication of all housepets" or some shit

I understand the cynicism, but from what I’ve seen none of the major rebel factions are pushing for sectarian conflict. There’s good reason to hope that Syria’s future path is a spectrum from Iraq-style dysfunction to Ireland-style “civil war politics” shaping regular elections.

I grew up with TNG, so it hurts to admit it has flaws. But the DS9-TNG transition really throws its commissioned officer-focus into sharp relief.

I used the “DS9 in 82 1/2 Hours” watchlist when I was getting my fiancée into Star Trek, and I credit it for getting us through the first season and a half. Though you can almost ignore it once you get to the Dominion War.

From what I remember of Speight Jenkins’ commentaries, a tenor usually needs 30 or 40 years of vocal development before they can carry a 4 hour opera.
