Unfortunately, yes. One of the islands I work on has starlings that roost out there and feed on the mainland. Ivy berries seem to be one of their favourites, because they bring a lot of seed back across with them each evening and I end up having to hunt down the seedlings under their roosts.

Blackberry's one of my long-time nemeses, and I do a fair bit of work on broom too. We've got foxglove and the same ragwort down here, but thankfully they don't pose too much threat. But some of the other biggies are pampas grass, banana passionfruit, old man's beard and climbing asparagus.

What kind of invasives are you dealing with over there? I can't help but be interested in other people's weed issues.

Now, with its identity confirmed, I attack. I ringbark the tree and paste the edges of the cut with a herbicide gel for good measure. Unable to transport water and sugars, the tree will die. I'll follow up next season by searching the vicinity for seedlings.

A look at the canopy through binoculars confirms what I already know: I've got a big one.

Years of experience draw my eye to an equally-suspicious tree trunk. The density of dead lacebark leaves increases as I approach the tree.

Carefully scanning the ground, I chance upon a suspicious-looking dead leaf.

No one's writing like you are in these comics. Truly incredible stuff!

Great picks, all. Sally Cruikshank's "Face Like a Frog" is hugely important to me.
