Next up is Stanley Pierce, a marauding English fullback, known for his silky first touch and a propensity to cut in from the left whenever he gets forward. Stan started his career at Macclesfield Town, making well over 200 league appearances, before later joining Sheffield United.

#LowTarMatthaus - Next up is Portuguese winger Filipe Luque... or Luque No.7 as he's known to his teammates. Described as a bit of a 'hit-and-hope' merchant by opposition defences and managers, his cross-come-shot speculative efforts have made him top scorer for his club for the last 5 seasons.

#LowTarMatthaus - First name on the team sheet is Darko Pakov, my preference is for each player to have a little back story tbh. I reckon our man here is a tough tackling Macedonian Enforcer who has no time for modern training methods or conditioning.

Absolutely nailed on, what do you reckon... gold for home kit, silver for away?

Hey John, loving the packet choice, i'm intentionally trying to keep the players fictitious though. I'm building up a backlog of suggestions, so those No.6's are certainly in there 👍

Pedantry never rests on social media, I was once 'pulled up' on the fact I'd used the incorrect style / year of boot on a player

Yeah I don't think it's too well known which is a shame really, he was a lovely bloke I could have listened to his stories all night, he wasn't that pleased about the Americanisation of his character either

Great thread... and no pun intended but I wondered if you'd ever read this book before? I bumped into Squadron Leader Foster (Hilts) in the mid 90s and he was good enough to share some stories and clippings on his way to a book signing. It's a great read

I was always quite partial to this one, oh and the one where the paper curls after the guy at the typewriter throws his page in the air, can't remember the name though

100% I reached burnout trying to juggle work, freelance and family a while back, and it's taken a good 2-3 years to reach a point where I'm happy to dip my toe back in the creative pool, but little and often is my new motto instead of all or nothing etc, personal projects taking priority too

Such a critical turning point in so many ways

Thanks Paul, everything just seemed that bit calmer when he was between the sticks. Rarely put a foot wrong. So unlucky with England too, really felt for him at the time

Exactly, the list is endless, Ziege doesn't have his head turned, Forlan isn't highjacked, the infamous Newcastle is closer to London than Middlesbrough fiasco etc etc

Yeah, think that's spot on, a shame for us but the move to the US was the making of him. Maybe an idea for your next book Vic? Boros Nearly Men - a 'what if' compendium where Branca doesn't get injured, Ian Arnold flourishes as a youth product and John Wark has an Ipswich style renaissance at Boro

Often think that with him and Kei Kamara too that our scouting team was 'close but no cigar', the numbers they posted in the MLS show what we thought we might be getting but it felt like the stars didn't quite align for us, worth a punt though. My lasting memory will always be watching him at Darlo

No but he's on the list to get to eventually
