This has been going on for years…

It sure has seemed that way this century.

It's bullshit. OK, so practiced religion is very elastic, fine, but Christianity isn't just whatever. The gospel writers vilified the rich, for crying out loud. Their Jesus was a moral perfectionist who preached the way of compassion. Not exactly what the the tech bros are pushing.

--"Or, as Daniel Francis, the Catholic founder of the AI start-up Abel, put it, “You have a duty as a founder to make really good products and get them into people’s hands. You’re making God real in people’s lives when they experience that."-- What? 😂 No.

From the VF article: "To have two of the world’s richest technologists, worth a recently estimated $400 billion (Musk) and $14 billion (Thiel), speak admiringly about biblical teachings challenges the view that Christianity is anti-capitalist or even anti-intellectual." WHAT?!! Where to begin. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Thanks for that Vanity Fair article. I see Girard does get a mention. Had to stop short at this: --“Like, how are you a smart person,” she asked, “and a Christian?”-- Nonsense, nobody but a few militants think Christians can't be smart. Obvs the problem is authoritarianism, fascism, and theocracy.

I did NOT know that. I thought René Girard, a Catholic convert (or revert, not sure which) had been the prime religious influence on Thiel.

You got me. 😂

Certainly. The Catholic Church describes very narrow boundaries on what constitutes an acceptable family.

2/n Pope Francis did NOT approve of the Catholic-Evangelical alliance promoting Christian Nationalism. The following article appeared in 2017, almost certainly with Vatican approval. www.laciviltacattolica.com/evangelical-...

1/n That Slate article gets a lot right, but also a few things wrong. Vance's puppetmaster Thiel is a radical libertarian (neither is he Catholic), and the whole social teaching-inspired element of some integralist thinking has been jettisoned by MAGA Catholicism.

I may be apostate, but every molecule of visceral Catholicism in me cries bullshit at Vance's conversion.
