Suddenly mad that we'll never get a Discworld book in which the wizards invent something like Large Language Monsters that eat everyone's stuff before regurgitating it, and Vimes arrests them all for being bloody stupid

imo grimly interesting that a lot of the current wave of misogynists don't even seem to be attracted to women, for whatever reason, feel like old school sexism was "we don't respect them but we want to fuck them", whereas this just reads like weird, poisonous, furious asexual resentment

If you're a non-Autistic person & an Autistic person is telling you about something they experience, or struggle with, and it resonates with you... PLEASE, 🚫 Don't say: "Well, we're all a little Autistic." ✅ Do say: "I find that relatable!" we are asking you nicely, plz plz stop saying that.

Possibly the biggest resentment my wife holds against me is that I refuse to allow us to have a wood-burning stove, because I understand something about the health impacts of air pollution. I’ll take that as the price to pay for working lungs.

I immediately read this to the intended tune, but reading the comments, is that because I’m somehow better at interpreting context than the Cake-ists and Mr. Brightside-rs, or just that I’m old?

Useful to know

I didn’t know this, but now I do. And if you didn’t know it either, now you do too

Imagine being a government and having a truly world leading industry that also contributes directly and indirectly to regional and national economy, produces leaders, thinkers and workers of the future and then not supporting it. This is the result - now coming to several UK universities…

Thought I’d be trendy and try one of these ‘alternative milks’. I don’t know what a magnesia is, but it made my Cocoa Puffs taste horrible…

There’s something surreal about watching NHS staff warn flu and covid are overwhelming hospitals whilst ditching masks and testing. No medic I know takes LFTs anymore. Many see a clinically vulnerable patient with a mask and don’t bother to offer to wear one too. Join the dots, lads.

Today's university in crisis is Coventry, which apparently is going for fire-and-rehire, making people apply for their own jobs or moving them to a subsidiary with an inferior pension scheme. There'll be another tomorrow, and then another the day after, and then another the day after that.

How bad is autism research? Well, this thread looks at alleged 'inappropriate sexual behaviour' from autistic people. Or, rather, the lack of research evidence of this, as it turns out. I took another starting point. Leung & team's research paper of 2024. They rely on three other research papers:/

Oh FFS, not again. Too many men using autism as a get out of jail free card. Most autistic people, like everyone else, know the difference between right and wrong. In fact, many have a better sense of fairness and honesty than neurotypicals.

There should be a word for wealthy white cishet men who suddenly embrace being autistic solely to try to avoid accountability for their shitty behavior.

🔁Repost this thread to help share the highlights from this week's Staff Assembly, where the UEA community used its voice LOUD & CLEAR to tell management to change course in its handling of the current crisis. #SaveUEA #UKHE @ucu.org.uk [1/10]

Morning Bikers

Look, calling out my self-demonstrated lack of comedic chops is just mean. Accurate, but mean. Ok, just accurate.

Universities do not exist to 'train', produce 'skills' or generate 'impact'. They exist to create new knowledge and teach about it. Any assertion to the contrary is in error, and is destroying everything it touches.

Long thread: You can predict that the usual suspects will latch onto this as another way to hit out at immigration. Here's the thing though, there is a big difference between "causation" and "correlation", and even the "correlation" argument is weak. 1/ #r4today www.theguardian.com/society/2024...

British farmers (well, Clarkson-esque ‘farmers’) are taking a leaf out of their French confréres’ book when it comes to protesting, how about we academics (and senior managers) do the same?

Covid corruption commissioner starts fraud probe Well I hope he gets a lot of our money back after the Tories and their PPE corruption.. And I also hope some of the profiteering wrong 'uns go to jail Let's see. www.bbc.com/news/article...

I still can’t get over this data point. “Annual accounts for the DHSC in January showed that nearly three-quarters of the money it spent on PPE during the pandemic had been written off.”

i am super biased here because i am an academic and would like to continue to be one *but* i do feel there comes a point where you have to ask yourself what the point of ‘the economy’ is if it doesn’t support education or healthcare or the arts or housing or food or water and utilities

£700m would probably have staved off most of the looming losses at UK universities (or any of a dozen crises you might find more pressing or closer to your heart) and just… the utter waste of it all. Add this to the PPE grift and Never let the tories be called fiscally responsible ever again.

The sentiment of this quote is one that, one way or another, has been relevant to my family for the last 8 years or so, mostly but not only for the reason Bethany mentions. I really wish it would stop, but then, that's the point Gandalf/Tolkien's making.

Please don't share videos or images of autistic children (or adults) having meltdowns. You likely wouldn't want someone exposing your most vulnerable moments without your permission, and autistic people deserve the same respect and privacy. Spread the word. #neurodiversity #autism #autistic

🤣have a very similar pic somewhere of one of ours doing that same sign while being bounced on their grandad’s lap
