I don’t agree that the digital environment has caused a decline in Finnish educational standards (which remain very high, by the way) - the failing PISA rankings, for what they’re worth, are usually attributed to huge demographic changes in the country and the impact of the 2008 crisis.

I’m not particularly talking about PISA rankings - Singapore, China and Japan may rank higher, but are students there better prepared for online disinformation, bullying, etc.? In Finland, this is a particular concern because of Russian disinformation campaigns.

Did we watch the same programme? Several people talked about banning children from accessing phones/internet/social media, both in schools and more generally, and I don’t know where you got the “backward person” bit. My point is that you need to educate people on how to use the internet.

The Finnish school system (as is often the case) is miles ahead of everyone else on teaching children how to relate to the internet. You don’t teach children how to deal with online disinformation and social media abuse by banning the internet.

I stopped listening to Today a few years ago, after the press review segment featured a headline from the Guido Fawkes website as if it were a normal newspaper, the last straw in far-right subliminal messaging.

Hesitated between that and custard creams, but I think it’s the wisest choice.

Jag hade en lärare som skrev “Bör höja ambitionsnivån!” till I stort sett alla eleverna. Jag inser nu att han hade helt rätt.

Naturalized citizenship can be taken away through a full federal court trial, at which the government has to meet a fairly high bar to prove that the person procured their citizenship through material fraud. It’s a good thing this bar is high: taking away citizenship should be extremely rare.

It’s a little disappointing that this article doesn’t end with the words “Humberside Fire and Rescue Service have cautioned the public to take care while operating pasta machines”

I love that people are offended enough by this post to leave pearl-clutching replies, but not quite enough to check out the actual account

A touching and pitch-perfect story with a real sense of place - you can hear the din of the washing machines. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of your work (and thanks for introducing me to the term riso comic)!

No arguments there, though I might add Dennis O’Neil’s Sandman Saga (Superman #233-242) and basically any book by Elliott S! Maggin and Curt Swan, who fundamentally understood the character.

What if you’re writing to raise your concerns about the proliferation of the use of ChatGPT?
comment in response to

I’ve always thought Elliott Maggin got this perfectly right. So much of his 1970s Superman work takes place in the offices of WGBS and the Planet and just shows the characters goofing around. Curt Swan’s art was perfect for this.
