those goddamn hippies sure can make ice cream

This "the average American has 3 friends" meme sucks because every one I've seen shows a picture of three people, but the pictures should be of four people, you stupid idiots.

in fairness, have you read some of the books written for little kids? they totally suck ass!

More free time? Yes. More peace of mind? Oh my, no. Estimates for violent mortality among pre-agricultural hunter-gathers, as Azar Gat notes in War in Human Civilization, were *extremely* high, in the range of 15-25% (higher for males, lower for females). 1/

Hey, everyone! My new comic is dropping today! Like, RIGHT NOW!! Please check it out! There are DAY ONE discounts and limited items! www.kickstarter.com/projects/kar...

I got sloppy about posting my book reading so here are the catch up posts to keep me accountable:

There is much here to question, the most obvious being the implication that the TV show FRASIER was somehow uncritical of, and found no fault with, its title character.

take that, judy blume

twitter (and also bluesky)

getting the hot gossip about Yemen war plans

I drew CABLE because for a long time now I've thought it'd be funny if I drew CABLE. Despite not really reading comics as a kid I grew up in a time where every new character in anything looked a little like CABLE so this stuff is embedded in my brain.

Absolute banger of a Tolkien essay here, about the myths and stories that Gondor and Rohan tell about themselves. Check it out!

You call that begging?

Now is a good time to make yourself a cup of coffee and read my FREE post about early novels by two crime fiction giants: VALDEZ IS COMING by Elmore Leonard, and KILLY by Donald E. Westlake which each asks the question "What kind of person are you?" billryan64.substack.com/p/you-aint-b...

Remembrance of things past. My nights have been plagued with dreams and disconnected visions for several weeks now. A child ghost, dinners with my parents, and beautiful women of bygone times. Tonight, I dreamt of a woman, an actress, from the late 19th century, the belle epoque era.

My new FREE TO ALL substack post is up. In a brief diversion from the main structure of these posts I'm taking a break by reading two long-time favorites: Elmore Leonard's VALDEZ IS COMING & Donald Westlake's KILLY. Lots to talk about with both! Please click billryan64.substack.com/p/you-aint-b...

I've been thinking about this and I suppose would go a step further that it seems like part of the 'promise' of genAI to some folks is not just the ability to commission artwork without paying an artist, but to be able to also take that artist's claim, not only of ownership, but of creatorship.

Glad to see we’re addressing the root cause of all of this: Luther’s heresy

Sometimes when you tape a two-times-a-week show first thing in the week, things happen and schedules get thrown off. This is why today's Across the Movie Aisle is about Val Kilmer despite his death occurring about a week ago. RIP to one of the best. www.thebulwark.com/p/rip-val-ki...

My new drawing demonstration is up on my Youtube channel: www.youtube.com/@frankchoart... Inspired by the new James Gunn's Superman trailer, it's Hawkgirl. I love the design of the character. However, her background origin story is crazy and confusing. I mean it. It'll make your head spin.

My new Reading Project post is up on my substack. Today I discuss THE LIE by O.H. Bennett, and THE HOUSEGUEST by Thomas Berger. This one is exclusive to paid subscribers, among whose numbers you should totally be. billryan64.substack.com/p/fundamenta...

I am heartbroken to hear the news that ROBERT E MCGINNIS has past away March 10th at the age of 99. One of the greatest American Illustrators ever is gone and not a single piece on the news anywhere about the man, his influence and his life.

RIP to the legend Robert E. McGinnis

One of my favorite interviews I've ever done on Tides of History, with the fantastic @bretdevereaux.bsky.social: Rome, Carthage, and the Punic Wars. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/r...

R.I.P. Val Kilmer. #valkilmer @valkilmerofficial.bsky.social

Wonder Woman original drawing I created for my Youtube channel. Since I get so many people asking me if I sell the original art from my videos. I decided to sell it here on Nerdcrawler. www.nerdcrawler.com/auctions/won... Now's your chance to own the original drawing you saw on my channel.

Look. I'll be honest. A WORKING MAN is not quite as good as THE BEEKEEPER (an almost perfect movie). But it's still pretty good if you're into the whole "Jason Statham doing righteous shit" genre. And I very much am into that. www.thebulwark.com/p/they-call-...

Ivan Mozhukin will return as Guy Who Really Wants That Soup in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

If you'd like to read a melancholy critical essay about Georges Bataille and H. E. Bates, with references to Will Self, Anthony Burgess, BOYHOOD, Stealers Wheel, and Stephen Crane, then have I got the post for you. billryan64.substack.com/p/the-music-...

Book No. 11: Life For Sale by Yukio Mishima. I enjoyed it a lot, the black humor and satire had me smiling throughout. A much easier read than Ulysses which I’m still going through which is a nice counterpoint when I need a pallet cleanser.

Wolverine Vs T-Rex. Felt like drawing a scene from Wolverine: The Jungle Adventure comic book, where Wolverine encounters the T-Rex that’s been terrorizing his tribe. You can see the full drawing video in real time with commentary on my YouTube channel. www.youtube.com/@frankchoartist

i have zero interest in most modern low budget shlock because it’s doing this self conscious “haha so bad it’s good just like the 80s!” thing. but you can’t produce that intellectually. you need to be trying to make a normal movie and have it come out wrong because you’re a crazy person

"We spent most of our time discussing the ways in which professional wrestling and the Insane Clown Posse help explain the phenomenon that is Donald J. Trump." That and much more. Ross Benes joins @sonnybunch.bsky.social to discuss his book on "low culture": www.thebulwark.com/p/the-low-cu...
