I'm calling it, this character is going to be complete furry bait a la Nick Wilde and Mr. Wolf.

I've seen the opposite tbh, moreso people dunking on it because they hate the designs of the human characters.

Elemental was also the 1st original Pixar film to release in theaters after the pandemic, and Pixar was coming off of a miserable 2022 with Lighyear flopping and Turning Red being so divisive. Elio has the benefit of following Inside Out 2, and one has to hope the latter bought Pixar some goodwill.

Nah, it's gonna bomb. It's got Jurassic World, Superman, and Fantastic Four releasing close to it, plus Bad Guys 2 two weeks later.
And the latter looks SIGNIFICANTLY better than this.

This might be up there with Snow White and Minecraft as one of the worst looking movies of the year, good Smurfing god.
comment in response to

It was pretty Smurfing bad, huh?
comment in response to

With that being said, we still have to see how Disney markets Elio.

Also there were different circumstances w/ Elemental. It was the first Pixar film in theaters since the pandemic, Pixar was coming off a miserable 2022, and Elemental was badly marketed. There was basically little to no hype for it.
2 out of 3 of those things are not true for Elio.

Struggling with a (relatively) early game boss only for them to become a common enemy later on in the game when you're much higher leveled and can wipe them out in the blink of an eye.
I don't know what that trope is called or if you know what I'm talking about, but that's always satisfying to me.

People are already shitting on it based on its concept, but people shitting on a Pixar film based on its concept alone is nothing new (see: Ratatouille, Up, Inside Out, Elemental as you probably know). And the whole situation.

I knew you'd love this movie.

And if you really want to go there, we may not even see that style again anytime soon because of the 3 future films we know of from Pixar, Toy Story and Incredibles don't use that style, and the girl from Hoppers looks more like a Laika protagonist to me.
comment in response to

Their response is just going to be that the Studio Ghibli style works better in 2D than 3D. I've seen someone make that exact comment, and that was their response.
At least with Elio, most of the movie is probably going to be in space with the alien characters that don't have the bean mouths.
comment in response to
post
While they seem a lot more mixed on Elio and/or complaining about the designs of the human characters.
Because apparently bean mouth only bad if Pixar uses it but Dreamworks using it for Bad Guys is perfectly fine.
comment in response to

Actually, Dog Man's got some reviews on Letterboxd, and the word is, it's a pretty solid movie. Not Wild Robot or Puss in Boots tier obviously, but probably more like Bad Guys tier.
Shame it's probably not gonna get nominated for Animated Feature next year b/c of a January release.
comment in response to
post
Oh, that wasn't aimed at you, that's just what they were saying.
comment in response to
post
Oh, no, no, Megamind 2 doesn't count because that was their television studio that made it and not DreamWorks Animation themselves. 🙄
comment in response to

Even I agree that DreamWorks is a lesser evil, but I HATE that the "animation is cinema" crowd seems to see them as the plucky good guys standing up to "evil" Disney and "evil" Pixar, like?? They ain't your friend either y'all.
comment in response to
post
Apparently Wild Robot was so good it made people forget that Dreamworks made a 4th KFP film and laid off a lot of workers last year (hell, I've seen people try to downplay that or argue those news articles were misunderstood or smth).
comment in response to
post
Because the tallest trees get the most wind, and Disney does legitimately deserve to be called out for the shitty things they do.
But yeah, the "animation is cinema" crowd thinks Disney is literally on Hitler levels of evil, and it's ridiculous. Plus there's a lot of hypocrisy and double standards.
comment in response to
post
Yeah, this has to be one of the strongest Best Animated Feature lineups ever. Hard to say none of these deserve to be nominated.
Side note: happy to see significantly fewer comments here on how Inside Out 2 doesn't deserve to be nominated, unlike Twitter. That movie's getting trashed there.
comment in response to
post
Also, it's obvious that they've actually seen Flow and Wild Robot or they never would have been nominated for other categories. Inside Out 2 didn't.
Mark my words, it's a two horse race between Flow and Wild Robot.
comment in response to
post
Yes, the Academy has their heads so far up their ass that the last 2 winners were not Disney or Pixar films. Box office is irrelevant too, recall that Incredibles 2 also made a billion and still lost to Spider-Verse.
To me, it seems like they're moving away from defaulting to Disney and Pixar.
comment in response to
post
Good thing Inside Out 2 probably isn't going to win because it's missed a lot of the precursors that Wild Robot and Flow have gotten.
And at this point, part of the reason I hope it doesn't win is because if it does, it'll be hated forever for "stealing" the Oscar, just like Brave and Toy Story 4.
comment in response to
post
Yeah, it makes me sad to see how much people turned on Inside Out 2, especially after Wild Robot and Transformers One came out. Like all the nominees can't be great.
It all just reads as "this Disney film doesn't deserve to be nominated b/c it's Disney, and they're evil" to me.

I was talking about the account they were citing there, but yeah. Let's hope they are being sus now.

I didn't know people said that about Gothel. The only thing I can think of is it's people being mad about another child protagonist disobeying a parent b/c unfortunately a lot of people think the parents are always right & children need to shut up and do what they say without any pushback.
comment in response to
post
Well, not announced. There's supposedly a Gothel movie in the works, though. It was mentioned on Twitter like 2-3 weeks ago.
With how many people were saying Gothel was right all along, though? I hope they're just rumors.
comment in response to

Disney announced a Gothel movie, why not do a Frollo movie?
I'm sure the base they're trying to reach would be able to connect with something like that swimmingly.

Reminds me of that one Hayao Miyazaki quote.

When people say "good movies," what they actually mean is original movies that cater specifically to their personal taste.
Which is EXTREMELY subjective.
There's literally no pleasing everybody.
comment in response to
post
The only people seriously saying this are probably either children themselves or adults who exclusively consume children's media. Neither has the slightest clue about what Oscar voters' tastes are like.
Sonic would have been considered too "corporate" to be nominated, on top it being a kid's movie.

Literally just the Happy Happy cult from EarthBound at this point.

Part of the problem is that lockdowns brought the people who probably WERE the school bullies and such onto social media, so these spaces don't feel safe anymore. And it's getting harder and harder to find them due to stuff like forums dying out and everybody being on like 5 social media sites.
comment in response to

There's also the fact that not everyone is great in social situations. For one reason or another, some people just have a harder time making friends than others.
I know when I was a kiddo, I turned to the Internet because of IRL bullying. It was like a safe space for me back then.

It's what happens when you get a bunch of people with egos together. Infighting, infighting, and more infighting.
Let 'em cannibalize each other, I say.

I keep saying that if the animated Mulan came out today, those troglodytes would call it woke feminist trash, and Mulan herself would be damned as a Mary Sue.
Also, I have seen them try to argue that Hunchback gets a pass cuz only Frollo is shown as evil and not the Catholic Church as a whole.

The Internet's become a hellhole since COVID. The most vile people imaginable are just chronically online now when it wasn't like that before and I'm over it too.
Have faith. Things will swing back in the other direction eventually, and these people will fuck off. Sorry you had to deal with that.
comment in response to

Because the Internet thinks Dreamworks good, Disney bad. It's literally the Hello Human Resources meme.
They're both unnecessary af, and I hope Elio beats it.

I'm probably going to stay on Twitter as well, but keep my account private.
Probably stupid of me, but I never realized how many horrible people are on that cesspit of a site. I haven't seen any of that here. 💜

I saw someone on Twitter say something about Incredibles 2 that I think applies Toy Story 4 as well.
It's like a 6 or 7/10 movie that's treated like a 1/10 movie just because the first three films happen to be 11/10 movies.
