Paul is a great journalist and colleague at Science and we are all in this moment dependent on you the scientists speaking to us to be able to describe the scale of what is being destroyed. If you can, do contact him 🧪

more foundations sitting on major endowments & donors with massive donor-advised funds need to be doing this. what else is the money for?

DO NOT BUY A DAMN THING TOMORROW if you can help it.

Many Medicaid recipients do not know they receive it because Medicaid is called different things in different states. The public narrative of Medicaid focuses on a distant other, but 40% of US children and 60% of nursing home residents receive Medicaid. Just SOME of the names by state are below:

From Turkey to Hungary to Venezuela to Benin, firing civil servants and dismantling government departments is how aspiring strongmen consolidate personal power. Scholars share lessons learned from around the globe: #CivilService #autocrats #DOGE

Genuinely think this is kinda game over for DOGE

Something is shifting. They are still breaking things and stealing things. And they will keep trying to break and to steal. But the propaganda magic around the oligarchical coup is fading. (1/2)

Only a few days left to submit your paper to the workshop “Policy Evaluation in Health and Labor” that I am organizing together with @sergijm64.bsky.social and @cristina-belles.bsky.social, as part of the BSE Summer Forum 2025! Deadline February 28!! Join us in Barcelona on June 3 & 4!! 👇👇🎉🎉

Please read, then call your legislators to demand they protect the most vulnerable in our society. Our daughter with complex medical needs (CDKL5) relies on the protections and supports provided by IDEA and Medicaid to preserve her quality of life. open.substack.com/pub/erinraff...

soon enough, the mere presence of black and latino students on campus will be illegal racial discrimination against white students www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

⏰⚠️🚨I suggest that #econsky contribute to this survey! Mention your papers, policy briefs, anything where U rely on data produced by the US federal Gov't. Surveys, ACS, health data, GIS files, satellite data, agriculture data, environmental data. Whether you got it from Gov't or via others.

@ipums.bsky.social users all over the world are optimizing access to user-friendly data to produce powerful research and evidence-based policies. #lovedataweek25 @lovedataweek.bsky.social

I was incredibly honored to be awarded the CSWEP Carolyn Shaw Bell Award. When I accepted the award, I talked about the importance of mentoring. The lessons I pass on are kind of obvious. But they are important, so I am going to share them yet again. (A🧵)

I put together an overview of recent developments in the literature on gender-based violence for @AEAjournals There's enough material for 2x 1.5hr lectures. I've covered the material in labor & gender economics classes I hope they can be helpful! www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ea7v9...

Again: Trump just ordered 2 dams open to levels that would’ve flooded areas and farms, without warning, all to back up the lies he told about the fires — and the rivers don’t even flow to LA. Locals panicked and they backed off. sjvwater.org/decision-to-...

The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...

Thinking real hard about The Good Place Committee today.

Since the US Census is gone (possibly to be back as Volk. Beobachter), remember you can still use IPUMS for until now. www.ipums.org

This is very true. While understanding the motivations and implications is important for predicting next moves (and explaining why TERFs are anti-feminist), the bottom line is we need to protect trans people's rights, period, end of sentence.

The bad news: it’s still January. The good news: you still have 2 days to return your unwanted Christmas purchases to Amazon.

NEW — OMB temporarily pauses all agency grants and loans programs. Per copy of memo: "The use of Federal resources to advance Marxist equity, transgenderism, and green new deal social engineering policies is a waste of taxpayer dollars that does not improve the day-to-day lives of those we serve."

I am begging the national media to start taking this seriously. Stop buying the claims that the framing of "temporary" or "pause." They are altering the review processes of federally funded scientific research from merit-based peer review processes to political screening by ideologues.

I really need people to understand that disabled folks: Exist across every other axis of oppression Are underrepresented by DEI efforts almost across the board Are the first to go in almost every situation of oppression Are laughed off by people who consider themselves inclusive

At UW, the indirect rate is 55.5%.

Viktor Orban pacified Hungarian universities by tightening control over their funding. It went pretty smoothly. Trump is going the same way. We will see how many American academics will be ready to risk their careers in defense of #AcademicFreedom. #AcademicTwitter www.economist.com/leaders/2021...

A functioning opposition party would already be making ads arguing that Trump and his minions are pro-cancer. Instead, we get conciliatory moves towards cooperation with evil.

Colleagues and I are submitting to NIH this spring. Another friend/collaborator is waiting for her proposal to be reviewed in February. I knew it would be bad, but the news today is chilling. Trying not to panic about the final two years of my current NIH funding until I have a reason to, but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Any Severance super fans or former Bell/Lucent employees out there? One reason I love the show are memories of being in the beautiful old Bell Labs building where I did a summer internship in 1998. (Not on the severed floor afaik.) I heard on the podcast that it’s now a mall!

Just catching up on the great burrito debate of 2025, but honestly shocked to learn that some folks aren’t getting stuck with a $30 admin fee (on top of tax, tip, delivery charges, etc) for food delivery. Is it really only Seattle? I personally cut way back after that started.

Anyone else meet Alex the Great outside of the conference today? I did and he is fabulous. #ASSA2025

#ASSA2025 check out this session on RCTs relating to increasing women’s representation in economics. Tomorrow at 2:30!

Why do the people who schedule conferences hate me? #ASSA2025
