Atlanta friends—please show up to hear Brian Goldstone discuss his remarkable book “There is No Place for Us.” And others—order the book! Details below!

Does your child want to go to college, want to go to med or grad school? The new cures for diseases, new technologies that we depend on come out of universities. #Trump, #Musk, #Vought are now killing higher education. If you haven't been paying attention, this would be a good time to wake up.

📣New paper alert 🧵Our paper on substance use in homeless populations @jama.com : 🗝️points: 1) >1/3 ppl use drugs regularly--meth is most common 2) ~1/4 of all ppl experiencing homeless (PEH) started using regularly AFTER becoming homeless (42% before) jamanetwork.com/journals/jam... 1/x

At a packed Mrs Dalloway’s bookstore to hear @kevinfagan.bsky.social discussing his new book “The Lost and the Found”

Another way the new administration seems to be blocking NIH funding: If study sections can’t meet, they can’t review new grants. No review = no funding = stalled research. #PublicHealth #EpiSky

#JobAlert: The California Policy Lab's UCLA team is hiring a Data Analyst focused on homelessness. Please share with your networks: capolicylab.org/careers/data...

🧪 #publichealth Newly funded NIH grants = new job offers. Renewed grants = jobs retained. Musk has paralyzed NIH funding. NIA council recommends funding for grants, meets 3x/year. The January meeting was cancelled and has not been rescheduled. Red state people please call, email your reps/senators.

Scoop --> Trump-Musk cuts just resulted in the firing of numerous top researchers at NIH's center for combating Alzheimer's, sources tell me. They predict big setbacks to fighting dementias. This cause was once championed by *Republicans.* Details here: newrepublic.com/article/1917...

Universities that receive federal funding are now required to rid themselves of any programs or trainings related to diversifying the workforce and educating about systemic racism and bias. I am disheartened.

Clear explainer of the potential of buprenorphine to save countless lives among ppl w opioid use disorder & the way stigma plays into the many current barriers to its use. (Reading the comments makes those barriers even clearer) www.nytimes.com/2025/02/16/m...

Hearing that the DOGE chaos hurricane is hitting HUD soon, and the plan is to devastate federal housing funding. Let's be clear: this would cause a cascade of catastrophic impacts nationwide, shutting down housing and dumping families into the street.

Make no mistake. This is an all-out attack on health in America. Not only is the EIS vital to controlling infectious disease; it was where a remarkably high fraction of our public health leaders received formative training and experience. www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t...

“Americans who value the spirit of discovery…need to issue a strong outcry. And legislators must exercise their constitutional responsibilities…This is not a fight that our country can afford to lose.” www.nytimes.com/2025/02/14/o...

The US federal government is—today—firing thousands of scientists. The short-term impact will be terrible; the long-term impact will be devastating.

We are hearing that there is a meeting of all NIH IC directors happening now. We are also hearing, from several sources, rumors about director and assistant director level removals coming soon. The impact of this wld be enormous. IC directors have all grantmaking authority for each institute. 🧪

It is very cold & rainy in SF. Nearby, Fremont has criminalized homelessness & "aiding & abetting" those who are. Being impoverished in a high cost housing market w/o shelter is now a crime. Being a neighbor who offers a warm drink or blanket is one too. www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2025/...

Just got off a webinar with a prominent national law firm on rules change on indirect rate. AAMC and other orgs on panel too. First, need to be convey that the rates are actual costs, not just overhead to pad the university coffers. Example- Institutional Review Board, space/utilities 1/4

NIH Office of Research On Women's Health. At top: Putting science to work for the health of women. Just below that: Page not found. The link: dead. I guess....improving the health of women is...no longer a priority. Or, even allowed?

This is part of an ominous trend. Studies like the YRBS help us understand health issues, guide our ability to respond to them—& are essential to our nation’s health & safety. Ignorance is not bliss, but dangerous. Government censorship of the truth is…well, you know.

Infectious diseases physician here: Expect increases in HIV in your community. Hepatitis C. Sepsis. Bloodstream infections. Influenza, covid, and other respiratory viruses. Expect loss of productivity due to communicable disease. Expect increased mortality. Expect healthcare system overload. (1/3)

This memo from @academyhealth.bsky.social is the most useful #NIH shutdown guidance I’ve seen so far. Highlights mine.

I am begging the national media to start taking this seriously. Stop buying the claims that the framing of "temporary" or "pause." They are altering the review processes of federally funded scientific research from merit-based peer review processes to political screening by ideologues.

Chilling. NSF not only halting review meetings (to review new studies) but also stopping work on funded proposals. Scientific advances in the US (funded by NIH or NSF) have not only made enormous contributions to the health and advancement of society, but are economic drivers.

While the drop in overdose is promising, not all populations benefited. In @statnews.com Dr. Trina Johnson (now a @ucsfbhhi.bsky.social postdoc) & Dr. Miriam Komaromy lay out tangible evidence-based steps to ⬇️ ODs in Black communities, who haven't seen the same ⬇️ as other communities.

I ran @USAID health programs for the last 3 years. Trump’s 90 day Stop Work Order on foreign assistance does serious damage to the world and the US. Examples:🧵

There is a direct connection between ⬆️ rents & ⬆️ homelessness. (And btw housing shortages & ⬆️ rents). And yet, many people will blame the homeless system if homelessness ⬆️ in LA next year…

True story from scientist I know at NIH. Yesterday, she was told to “not use as many gloves” because they can’t order replacements. Go Fund Me for gloves for NIH scientists? Dystopian doesn’t begin to explain it.

Health Disparities are real & lethal. Research on ⬇️ health disparities & improving health among impacted pops is critical. The NIMHD (NIH Institute that focuses on ⬇️ disparities) website remains. But if you search NIH Health Disparities, the page is gone. Chilling.

NIH study sections & council meetings cancelled. NIH employees told to not purchase supplies. Does the public understand what the NIH does or what this means? This article ⬇️ points out but doesn’t name some of the wonders of science & quiet heroism of scientists whose work leads to these “miracles”

Hi, Vox reporter here: If you've had a study section, NIH travel, or other NIH-related meeting cancelled (or not), raise your hand! Reply or DM me, and repost for visibility if you're able. #academicsky @drugmonkey.bsky.social
