Your weather app gets its info because of NOAA. Your mail arrives at your home because of USPS. Your plane navigates the skies because of the FAA. Your food is safer -- and we get alerts when it isn't -- because of USDA. You hear about earthquakes *worldwide* because of USGS.

The trouble is, once I started imagining they were taking selfies I couldn’t unsee it

It may not be cool or hip in some circles, but we legitimately do need a massive amount of people to run for office. Flood the school boards, councils, county seats, state legislatures, Congress, etc. Big changes at the top happen when the ground shifts at the bottom. And that can start now.

Medicare stops access to #Telehealth April 1st for almost all. [Even rural pts must drive to a 🏥 office 1st & THEN get telehealth.] This will lead to: 1️⃣ less access to specialty care 2️⃣ poorer outcomes 3️⃣ higher costs for people with cancer #Telemedicine was a step forward. Let's not fall back.

Queen of Swords Press author Michael Merriam’s mother just passed away snd he’s raising funds for funeral and memorial costs.

Hey: If you made it through the week, and you tried to do some things to help other people — large or small — where you could, and you need to hear it, I’m here to tell you thank you. Get some rest. Figure out today, then figure out tomorrow.

Anyway, he's the wildest mash-up I've ever heard: MC Hammer vs The Eurythmics vs The Talking Heads vs New Order vs Donna Summer.

Libraries buy books; authors receive royalties every time a book is sold. Authors aren't missing out on compensation. Libraries don't cheat authors. I'm an author. Libraries carry my books. I love libraries.

Yeah. In addition to Amazon my books are on Kobo, Google, Apple, Nook, Overdrive, Hoopla. Everand, Smashwords, Tolino, Vivlio, and more. And that's just for the ebooks.

Baby tapir Ume had her first encounter with the water dish and it’s adorable! 🥰

Joe Cardiello said his small but vital team was taken apart without so much as a word to his supervisors.

Yep. I've responded to several just in the last few days who invoke Darwinism or FAFO when it's generally the most vulnerable who are the ones affected. Reserve your ire for the grifters at the top of the pyramid who are getting rich spreading lies to folks who don't know who or what to believe.

Measles are contagious. Measles cause 1 in 4 people to be hospitalized. Measles can be deadly especially in children. Measles can cause blindness & deafness. Measles can cause brain damage yrs later. Measles can cause "immune amnesia". Measles are preventable with MMR vaccine. #medsky #IDsky 🛟 😷🧪

the meanest and nastiest part of these layoffs is they aren’t even saying “sorry guys, this isn’t personal, it’s just about budget cuts.” they’re going out of their way to make them firings, not layoffs, and telling you it’s your own fault

I don’t know why this is hard for folks to understand. The layoffs aren’t just about probationary employees. They are going beyond that. It won’t stop. It’s all about making agencies non-functional.

I'm digging down details on a few stories, but I'm very interested in hearing from any federal employees or contractors: * who are just seeing DOGE folks coming into your agencies now * about what has happened in the wake of a DOGE bomb: rehires, canceled programs, big changes, etc. Signal: crg.32

This is that song I just mentioned. Haha.

No, the mail is not “the least of our worries.” It’s a fucking important worry. It is the only postal service that delivers to every address. They are only provider of complete mail services for overseas military bases and provide free overseas PO boxes. They help prepare passport apps. Ship meds…

Among my new-to-me music Friday purchases is an EDM remix called Hostile Government Takeover. It has some funny lines. I wonder if 2025 resistance songs will become classics like some of the 1970s songs did.

Grief. There’s no better word for what I’m feeling now. Grief. Knowing that my life’s work is seen as frivolous and unimportant. A line in a ledger to be crossed out, by a 19-year-old kid named BigBalls.

Stronger building codes save lives. Stronger building codes reduce risk / damage to properties. Stronger building codes mean fewer taxpayer dollars needed to aid post-disaster recovery. Stronger building codes are an investment. Not a spend. www.fema.gov/sites/defaul...

This reminds me of a review on a vampire anthology I was in. It was given one star because “every story had a vampire in it.”

Since it seems all I can sculpt are wolves and tigers at the moment, here's a look at some of the wolves I've made over the past year or so 🐺✨ #art #pottery #SciArt

Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

This agency is the place that stops hackers from shutting down the power grid

My personal belief is that's what all of this is about. Privatize public lands, the postal service, air safety, you name it. A big ol' money grab.

Cutting something from your budget that gives a positive ROI isn’t the same thing as saving $.

I had a dream last night that I was trying to crochet a new row onto something (maybe a blanket), but all the stitches pulled out because the yarn in the row I was trying to add to was rotted and couldn't hold the stitches.

Was recently thinking about a sort of hierarchy of needs that speaks to this moment. 1) Survive. Nothing happens without this. 2) Hope. Believe in a better future. 3) Plan. What can I do to help make that future a reality (even a small thing)? 4) Act. Put your plan in motion.

I just watched a baby panda play with an adult panda for a good five minutes and it was very calming.

If you leverage AI in literature review, CHECK THOSE REFERENCES. I just finished reading through a proposal on a topic that I knew well, and thus was surprised to see several papers referenced that I hadn't known of. Then when I looked them up online, I found they didn't exist. 7 fake references.

In my murder mystery, there’s a scene where her mother tells her not to be a rock, to be water. Water only looks gentle, passive. It goes around, it finds away. But water cuts stone. With time, water will bring down a mountain. Be like the water.

I think we really need to repeat, and keep top of mind - The federal employee firings are NOT ABOUT SAVING MONEY. What is spent on those employees is peanuts compared to most of the money in the government. Firing federal employees sows confusion, depletes morale, and degrades government service.

"These people are not the enemy; they are not bloated staffing, redundancies, superfluous employees, or government waste. They are good people who are underfunded, underpaid, and underappreciated at the best of times."

DOGE in practice: Disabled Army veteran who has 4 kids and did 3 tours overseas is fired from his job at Bronx VA hospital

Firings happening right now at the NSF.

Seriously. There were times pre-GPS I just never got to where I was trying to go. Now I can pull over, type in the info, look at the little map, and see where I went wrong. (I also once ended up on the far edge of some town in Spain thanks to a bad map in a travel book. GPS is amazing.)

I read On Tyranny last week and in addition to the page that's always quoted there was one in there about how people slowly transformed into Nazis by saying, "What if he has a point about that..." Don't go there. Leave Canada the fuck alone. Gaza is nowhere we want to be. AI is a shit show.
