This is a terrible terrible destructive decision. These sorts of long running research programmes take decades to build and their insights accumulate over decades too - the longer they run, the more valuable they become. This is knowledge vandalism. Nothing new and shiny can replace it.

"Wir bewegen uns geradezu auf eine immer autoritärere Phase zu. Und in solchen Zeiten werden diejenigen, die Fakten verbreiten, eigentlich immer angegriffen. Dementsprechend befürchte ich schon, dass Forschende immer mehr unter Druck geraten", so @pialamberty.bsky.social:

Researchers who have had grants terminated--tell your story! The #DefendResearch team is collecting testimonials about this impact of #censorship on research that we will use as part of a toolkit for contacting elected officials. #NSF, #NEH, #NIH www.defendresearch.org/testimonials

Can confirm that my NSF grant "How False Beliefs Form & How to Correct Them" was cancelled today because it is "not in alignment with current NSF priorities" Shocking that understanding how people are misled by false information is now a forbidden topic. Our work will continue but at a smaller scale

Day 30: The #MathArtMarch prompt is "game". Take a stippling of an image, create a boundary (minus one edge so it isn't a circuit), then make a minimal spanning tree of the remaining nodes. Remove another edge elsewhere on the boundary and you have a maze. Fun work with @baabbbaash.bsky.social

Almost 500 confirmed cases of measles now with most in Texas the epicentre of this outbreak. This is almost certainly an understatement of how many cases too 😔

Colleagues are cancelling their US work trips. I worry that international colleagues in the US are at risk if they collaborate with us on certain topics. I've written a new post about the increasing danger of being a foreign scientist in the US. christinapagel.substack.com/p/trumps-att...

In 2011, my brother (Derek Bosch) and I designed this piece in support of gay rights. In 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled (by a 5-4 margin) that the US Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage. I sure hope that this right will not be infringed!

Britta Späth has dedicated her career to proving a single, central conjecture. She’s finally succeeded, alongside her partner, Marc Cabanes.

🎉Congratulations to Melanie Siebenhofer who successfully defended her thesis "A Provably Good Connection: Spanning Trees, Edge Expansion, and Semidefinite Programming" with an impressive presentation! 😍👩‍🎓🎊

For 60 years, car advertising has programmed us that driving is freedom, that cars are how we get around, that driving — even reckless driving —is a symbol of status & power. But what if a car marketing vet used his skills to highlight the insanity of car culture? sf.streetsblog.org/2020/11/05/r...

When I wrote my camps book, people sometimes had difficulty understanding how concentration-camp regimes were proud of what they were doing and wanted attention for it, even as they also hoped to keep many aspects secret and terrorize vulnerable classes. Anyway, this is what that looks like.

Don't trust "AI" and also realize that the push to have "AI" in everything happened because some tech people wanted to get rich and other tech people didn't want others to get rich without them, and now they've all spent too much money on a bad product and are trying to scramble out of the hole.

Great article in @informs.bsky.social ORMS Today by Prof Anand Subramanian on his extraordinary Subject to podcast. Honored to have been one of the first to be interviewed with intro through Panos Pardalos. Thanks, also, for including my quotes in the article pubsonline.informs.org/do/10.1287/o...

German lawmakers passed a mammoth spending plan Tuesday that could allow for up to a trillion dollars in debt-fueled investments in defense and infrastructure over the next decade, according to some estimates.
