🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: A small human (6?) with a Bluey backpack and an oversized pink baseball cap steps off a school bus and walks straight into her mum's outstretched arms. A big warm hug and an excited recounting of the day follows as they wander home.(1)

This thread: not bullshit

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

After years of watching @floriangadsby.bsky.social make pots I had a chance to make one of my own. Absolutely loved it!

The International Day of #Women and Girls in #Science highlights equality and diversity in research. ETH Zurich also aims to highlight the achievements of female scientists through various initiatives and campaigns. ethz.ch/staffnet/en/...

The ACS has deleted its website on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Respect. And with that move, have shown they are worthy of none of the latter. People ask why no-one stands up to fascists, this is why - they are too worried about their own standing to challenge it. www.acs.org/about/divers...

Again a case of data manipulation in chemistry with > 40 flagged papers over 14y Again a broken review process Again little/no editor reaction in some journals Again diffusion of responsibility ...time for change #chemsky, #researchintegrity

Interested in an exciting PhD project working in a stimulating environment in the Centre for Designer Quantum Materials, combining cutting-edge experiments, bespoke instrumentation, complex data analysis and numerical modelling? 🧵Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand: A man (18?) and a woman (20s?) are walking down the street. As they pass a pharmacy she throws up her hands: "You HECKLED a poetry recital. WHO DOES THAT?!" He shrugs: "I dunno. Uhm. Me... Sorry?" and laugh-yelps when she thumps him in the ribs. (1)

Wholeheartedly agree with this work! It is common sense and should be standard practice.

We worked for months with USAID to build an $85,000,000 project to end TB in two regions of the Philippines. The project is funded by private money, the Philippine government, and matching USAID funds. It could provide a blueprint for eliminating TB worldwide--except it's...not happening.

Spent a few days feeling bad because I thought the grant I was applying for one could add up to 10 achievements, and I didn't have that many. Then while uploading my "achievements" realized the maximum is just three... Well clearly reading comprehension isn't one of mine.

Empa has opened the CarboQuant Lab, a cutting-edge hub for exploring quantum effects in carbon! Supported by the Werner Siemens Foundation and the @snsf-ch.bsky.social, CarboQuant aims to create a materials platform for carbon-based quantum technologies.

Happy Lunar New year!

Happy Lunar New Year 2025 @science.org

Very, very happy to finally see our wires, ahem, act like wires. Thanks to the crew at IMDEA, and congrats to 'soon to be Professor' Yueze Gao for his first "*" pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

Hello! Just created an account on Bluesky. A chemist believing the power of molecules. Synthetic chemistry, molecular nanocarbon science, catalysis, and chemical biology. Be unique, go crazy, be happy!

Hello bluesky :)

This cast looks like a delightful mess. So excited! Ideally Fatiha, Jason and Mathew would be on a team together to maximize the chaos. But any combination of these people is bound to be very fun. As a long time listener of No Body Panic, I am hoping for a Stevie win (but it's probably Rosie's)

A very quick and delicious meal of Szechuan noodles with bork and green beans following a recipe from @recipetineats. Sauce is ketchap manis, oyster sauce and sambal oelek. #chemistswhocook.

Hello World! The UK Surface Analysis Forum is now on Bluesky! Stay tuned for updates on our next meeting at the National Physical Laboratory, July 15-16 this year, as well as interesting updates from our community!

All I'm saying, @royalsociety.org, is that your one of your Fellows giving Nazi salutes is never going to be a good look for you.

@royalsociety.org what the fuck does it take?

Saw a toddler cry because his dad didn't let him tricycle into traffic.

I wonder if Musk's takeover of Twitter created a crisis in the tech world. He fired a large fraction of the employees and the site still "worked". So many firms started laying off tech workers... At the same time the advances in AI made it seem even less workers will be necessary in the future.

New Sci Rep paper with odd-looking figures that don't look like any image conversion issue I've seen before. Has some AI vibes (fonts, line spacing of legend), but there are likely better explanations. Any thoughts? @nature.com pls investigate (who copy-edited this) www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Seems my #ContaminatedBlood tirade made into into the Daily Mail… of course, they frame it as an attack on Labour, but ALL UK governments over the past few decades are culpable. Anyway, the repeated Government statements are hollow and worthless. Words are cheap; action is what is needed

I’ll miss gently berating him about how he could never organise files on his laptop and always had hundreds of files on his desktop. Fraser delivered my first chemistry lecture and the rest is history… I learned so much and owe him so much. RIP. chemistry.northwestern.edu/people/in-me... #Chemsky
