What an absolute pleasure to have hosted Ryan Skinnell for a Zoom talk on teaching public rhetoric in the second era of Trump. About 130 folks signed up--college and K-12 educators and concerned community members. Here's what I know: WE SHOW UP, even when we are terrified, pissed, and uncertain.

New blog this morning! "Some of my magical brethren have referred to my home as a “magical bunker” ... Full credit to the spirits I live with – some of that is their doing. But some of it is also a very long habit of high-test protection magic. Which brings me to the present moment." #WitchSky

More of this, America.

I work for The Weather Company, which has a much used cellphone app for the weather, provides aviation weather services, and much more. We stand on the backs of giants, relying on information from the National Weather Service for what we do. Harming the NWS will harm us and many other businesses.

Oops 😬

"And then we'll have a white guy with a shaved head wearing a brown shirt block the way..." "Come on, Bob, no one will believe that part of the script. Dial it down."

Musk and his coup are very unpopular. People who oppose it have much to gain. newrepublic.com/article/1911...

Rather than magick on a national level, my guidance has been to focus on the soul of the land of our towns, states and regions, with the intention of cleansing, protection and blessing amid chaos. State birds, flowers, and minerals can be helpful allies to call on.

This talk is coming up on F, February 14th, 1pm est. Pls DM for reg link.

Perfectly captured.

Just shy of 75 million Americans voted against a second Donald Trump presidency—but the Capitol police officers who stood between the forty-fifth president’s supporters and Congress on January 6, 2021, are especially aggrieved. newrepublic.com/post/189245/...

One day, your skull will be as empty as a conch shell on a fence post, full of wind and gentle quiet. Today, it’s a cauldron of ghosts. Flesh and electricity. Water and memory. A machine that makes reality. Now. Here. Your skull is the garden where fact flowers into meaning.

The Arctic Ocean could see its first ice-free day as early as 2027, with a likely window within 9-20 years after 2023. This won’t bring dramatic change overnight, but it marks a fundamental shift in the Arctic’s natural environment—a stark warning about climate change. #ActOnClimate

"One of my teachers at Columbia was Joseph Brodsky...and he said 'look,' he said, 'you Americans, you are so naïve. You think evil is going to come into your houses wearing big black boots. It doesn’t come like that. Look at the language. It begins in the language.'"

There's still room in the January Writing Retreat. Pm or email for more info. (Or check out writinglostriver.org/classes-and-... )

The Trumpists who are true believers are despicable, but the Trumpists who know better but go along with MAGAism to opportunistically get their shot at power are perhaps more loathsome.

Looking forward to this discussion (with grad students in Public Rhetoric) this Wednesday. Drop an email my way if you'd like the Zoom link.

The thing about Twitter versus Bluesky is that the right needs liberals on Twitter to make it feel worthwhile, whereas the left doesn’t need conservatives on Bluesky to make it feel worthwhile.
