This is an excellent speech by the new Chancellor of Oxford University, William Hague. Lots of good jokes, but also a staunch defence of what a university should be. We're going to need a lot of that in the years ahead.

Following some leaked comments about the future of wholly online degrees last week, @cathellis13.bsky.social and I break down what this really means for the higher education sector... futurecampus.com.au/2025/02/18/t...

Last week when I visited Kalgoorlie, home to the 'super pit' of Australia, I couldn't resist telling participants in a GenAI workshop that this was their chance to 'get on the tools'! Though my activities didn't require an alcohol test beforehand... quite the opposite ;-)

🚨🥳 new paper alert! The House of Cards paper (the companion to last year's seminar - youtube.com/watch?v=IO-y...) has been published. Thanks to Rola for her leadership of the project and the team for their hard work. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Delighted to be co-author on open access paper on 'the house of cards' metaphor we used to characterise experiences of higher ed students www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... Thx for having me! @ rola ajjowi; @crawfordnic.bsky.social @ Margaret Bearman; @molliedollin.bsky.social @drjot.bsky.social

Today at Curtin I'll be providing an all-staff briefing session on our 'Assessment 2030' work, and will be integrating the wise words of @cathellis13.bsky.social from last week's USYD GenAI Leaders forum: "we need to stop detecting cheating, and start detecting learning." 🙌

Most edtech sold to schools is not supported by evidence. Now, a new edtech evidence industry promises to address this gap to support schools. For our new article, we studied how "edtech brokers" make evidence and how they are becoming "edtech knowledge governors" doi.org/10.1080/1476...

Incredibly excited to be part of a team funded by ACSES to investigate how to support academics towards inclusive curriculum! Led by Chris Browne and Sally Baker of ANU, with a few of my fav Bluesky friends too @sarahoshea.bsky.social @kieranballoo.bsky.social www.acses.edu.au/2025-26-larg...

Alex Steele starts out a great panel chat on pointing out TEQSA GenAI note mentions processes, people, and practice... but nothing about learning! #ascilite2024

Having fun at #ascilite2024! Shameless plug for my wee little poster abstract here: publications.ascilite.org/index.php/AP...

Is there a reason this panel is a plug for bluesky? I mean I like it sure, but I don't need a panel telling me why social media is good... #ascilite2024

The importance of research-informed decision-making IMO underscores the importance of senior leaders to have research (and maybe even T&L!) backgrounds and active engagement in research production... #ascilite2024

I (obviously) agree with the idea of consilience (who wouldn't?) - but easier to say than do. The way the academic workload works, doing things that take considerable time, and harness big teams with qual and quant etc, isn't necessarily rewarded (nor read). #ascilite2024

"Threshold standards guides everything about higher ed" - says @jasonmlodge.bsky.social. And they might change. (But I would argue we 'mind' them more than follow them!) #ascilite2024

Have I ever heard a @jasonmlodge.bsky.social keynote where he doesn't diss learning styles!?! Drink. #ascilite2024

I resonate strongly with Jason's point that the higher ed field often recycles the same ideas over and over! @jasonmlodge.bsky.social #ascilite2024

Jason begins his keynote with a slew of the fear mongering vibes around ed tech over the years... and now says this time (GenAI) is different... hmmm where are we going with this!? @jasonmlodge.bsky.social #ascilite2024

@czernie.bsky.social is 100% right. You want to make a difference? Get involved in your uni's procurement process of ed tech softwares (including GenAI). Push back - ask thorny questions. Don't let them cut out the academic voice, especially the voice fighting for greater equity. #ascilite2024

Fan-girling just slightly over meeting @czernie.bsky.social at #ascilite2040. A thread in our convo is what does an 'advocate' in higher ed look like? And how can 'simply' being on committees can in fact be a form of activism and resistance against the machine... (if you speak up) ✊

Jonathan Brazil highlights the UNESCO AI literacy dimension of 'attitudes' - what does this mean? What attitudes should students have? Surely we can't be prescriptive here!! #ascilite2024

The amazing @amandalovestoaudit.bsky.social presenting at #ascilite2024 on assessment design and genai. Fantastic session as always.

Ha! @timbocop.bsky.social points out to @jasonmlodge.bsky.social (as he uses words like delve) that Claude / LLMs shape us, as we shape it.... #ascilite2024

Yes, 'you use GenAI to develop your evaluative judgement' says @margaretbea.bsky.social (I suppose you can use anything), but how does the instant feedback change this bit?

As @margaretbea.bsky.social is speaking about her very repetitive process of getting ChatGPT to modify an image, I think about how markedly different that is from creating an image before AI #ascilite2024

Also enjoying @timbocop.bsky.social reflections that all literacies change --- be it cultural, digital or AI. Mmmmm... chewy thoughts. #ascilite2024

Love @timbocop.bsky.social comment that it's not about individual AI literacy but collective literacy! #ASCILITE2024

Summarising Paula DB (loosely): adding AI doesn't change the primary goal of education - to get learners to reflect on their own learning and develop their own 'how to' on learning #ASCILITE2024

AI literacy panel is happening (standing room only) with @jasonmlodge.bsky.social @margaretbea.bsky.social @timbocop.bsky.social and Paula DB, who will 'blue sky' better? I'm up against @drjot.bsky.social --- eeek

Conference rant: please don't just summarise your abstract/paper - unpack and translate it for others. And if you didn't find much, just be honest, eh? Part of the process! #ascilite2024

A mini CSHE (centre for the study of higher education) reunion at #ascilite2024

link.springer.com/article/10.1... Great to see this in print! #phenomenography of #interdisciplinary higher education

How could university placements be more inclusive for diverse learners? Through proper pedagogical design, we argue in this paper led by @molliedollin.bsky.social. Now published in the latest issue of Studies in Higher Education www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Thx @amandalovestoaudit.bsky.social for being our keynote speaker at Curtin's 'Teaching with Technology!'. Amanda's brief for the talk was to discuss her path to becoming one of Australia's most celebrated tertiary educators - her takeaway? Don't forget edtech requires people! ❤️

Last week I was lucky enough to enjoy the TEQSA conference alongside the venerable Kelly Matthews, and we summarised our reflections of the day in a recent Future Campus piece. Big change in HE is happening, but it won't get done without 'middle leaders'. futurecampus.com.au/2024/11/14/m...
