to be clear: when they write "Democrats" they actually mean Third Way and a guy who was a Deputy Mayor 25 years ago

Yet again, we see the majority of communities supporting their libraries as Huntington Beach, CA voters reject their controversial "library review" board amid election awash with disinformation. www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/n...

going to the library book sale “just to look” went about how you would expect

Not taking anything away from Senator Padilla because he was treated atrociously But I JUST want to remind everyone that the Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, a Black woman, was just indicted for just asking questions at an ICE detention center in her state Keep that same energy of support for her

It is fascism. At a journalism event I asked about using the word so journalism can cover and explain it. I was told that we can't call fascists fascists because it would put off the fascists. This is fascism. Those who refuse to identify it are not doing journalism.

"They didn't realize they were tackling a Senator for asking questions, they thought they were tackling a journalist for asking questions" oh, ok then

Afterwards, Sen. Padilla framed what happened in exactly the right way: "If this is how the Department of Homeland Security responds to a senator with a question...I can only imagine what they're doing to farmworkers, to cooks, to day laborers, in Los Angeles & throughout California & the country."

When we throw up our hands and say none of it matters, we're doing the fascists’ work for them. They don't need to hide their corruption if they can convince us it's pointless to look. They don't need to silence truth-tellers if we've already decided truth is meaningless.

I spent some time at the site where protestors incinerated five Waymos—all lined up neatly in a row in downtown LA—and spoke to journalists, eyewitnesses and activists who were there. This is how protestors weaponized Waymos and Lime scooters, and turned them into icons of the anti-ICE uprising

This WSJ story about the decline in search traffic because of AI summaries is so grim. Every single outlet spent 15+ years contorting their coverage to cover the same things as everyone else trying to grab SEO, only for Google to rugpull them, just like social networks did. tinyurl.com/bdpzc399

they never miss

It is pathetic how easily network news executives let right wingers manipulate them. Terry Moran rightly calls Stephen Miller a hater driven by bile, and ABC News accepts the idea that this is “unhinged” behavior. Critiquing people abusing their power is the JOB of journalism.

innovators in LA finally finding a productive use for lime scooters

spanish treasure fleet has been diverted to bahamas, blackbeard says

the issue is not just ICE. we can live free and safe. or we can have police like we have right now. we cannot do both

Be careful, friends, when you read accounts of what is happening in LA. We will hear a lot about violence, and it is essential to remember who is defining that term. "When state actors refer to peace, they are really taking about order..." (@prisonculture.bsky.social and @mskellymhayes.bsky.social)

Anyway solidarity to the comrades in L.A. Thank you for fighting.

You cannot go about your life thinking about ways to avoid making fascists angry. You will not succeed, and you will not be free.

So, since bad history is damaging: when the civil rights movement talked about "nonviolence" they meant a set of tactics. They planned actions for maximum disruption and intentionally defied police and laws. This is very different from how "peaceful protest" is meant by many using it today.

I regret to inform you the Fifth Circuit is at it again #libsky www.libraryjournal.com/story/librar...

Belated May reading wrap-up. Lots of comfort/escapist reading this month, heavy on the litRPGs and detective novels. Favorite out of the fifteen was probably Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi. www.tiktok.com/@molly0xfff/...
