Our Ragged Hollow adventurers have managed to explore the dwarven tomb and walked away with some loot. Well most of them... Campaign blog: blog.monkeyx.games/2025/03/03/r...

One of my favourite aspects of Traveller RPG is the space combat. Its tactical and flavourful. Gives everybody something to do. First time running it with a new crew so it pretty much took the session but everyone seemed to enjoy it a lot. Campaign blog: blog.monkeyx.games/2025/03/01/t...

I've been meaning to put these thoughts down for a while and the morning's coffee hit right so here it is. Advice for making good player characters in Call of Cthulhu (possibly applicable in a broad sense to other more trad investigation games). blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/28/m...

We had an absolute blast last night playing the Mothership scenario Another Bug Hunt. The players were fully engaged and the pacing was just right for a sci-fi horror one-shot. After action report (WARNING: SPOILERS): blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/27/m...

My Romance? Chemical.

Things got a bit timey-wimey space-wacey in our D&D game. Trick with these weird-outs is lots of cutting between different players so nobody is left too long to get bored. Definitely was something new for some of the players with a +ve reception. Campaign blog: blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/25/u...

We had our first PC death in our Ragged Hollow adventure. It was the most OSR kinda of death possible (failed save then too much damage). Took stock and the players were all accepting of it even tho we were all attached to the PC in question. Campaign blog: blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/24/r...

The new Traveller team have a naturally charismatic and considerate leader plus a very capable engineer and marine. Starship operations tend to leave medics out and so it was nice to shine the spotlight a bit on the ship's doctor in this session. Campaign blog: blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/22/t...

If you played TTRPGs between 1970-2004, PhD Candidate Geoffrey Ramirez (Binghamton U) is seeking participants for “Character Creation: The Tabletop Role-Players Oral History Project” as part of his dissertation. Interviews will be archived at the Strong Museum of Play (can be time-locked, etc)

Fascinating answer to a great question about what London in 1900 would surprise someone from 1800. Lots of RPG ideas in this 👇 www.reddit.com/r/AskHistori...

There needs to be a map of what different OSR and adjacent systems are good for. Because I feel there's a fair bit of confusion about why you'd play OSE, Cairn, Mork Borg, Shadowdark etc etc Or the kind of games you'd play with them. @oldscouserp.bsky.social @elevatedpachyderm.bsky.social

When one of your players misses a session, its a good opportunity to bring out your tropes. So the 'heretic' cleric gets a visit from an angel. I've also given the party a MacGuffin to guide them through the adventure. Expectations set... Campaign blog: blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/19/u...

Sometimes the justified caution of OSR play can lead to timidness or analysis paralysis. Which is why I like it when you can give the party something to boost confidence. Like dealing with a strange rat-goblin in a well. Campaign blog: blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/17/r... 1/2

Interesting article about gate keeping and the perception of this can mean some of the settings grognards love may disappear. I'm a big fan of bringing new players to the hobby and younger players to my favourite settings. 1/2 grognardia.blogspot.com/2025/02/grog...

One thing about D&D 2024 is that the PC power levels have once again crept up. When facing 2014 monsters, even a supposedly deadly encounter can feel trivial. It'll be interesting to see how the balance shifts with the new Monster Manual. Campaign blog: blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/15/u...

Excited to be running a new Traveller campaign for the first time in 2 years! After playing various chapters of Secrets of the Ancients at cons, hoping to run the whole thing. Borrowing a lot from @sskorkowsky.bsky.social to flesh out the details. Campaign blog: blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/14/t...

A bit of a long post but here are my thoughts &advice on forming groups to play RPGs in 2025. Its something I absolutely love to do. I enjoy playing different things and meeting new people. Especially when they're new to the hobby. Its a golden age to be a GM. blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/11/f...

It goes without saying that I think you should check out @nightjargames.bsky.social's SOLARCRAWL, which I immediately backed. I can't think of a better use of Galen's considerable talent than a game like this. It's going to be gorgeous and strange and excellent. www.kickstarter.com/projects/sol...

Hey TTRPG Bluesky! I made a starter pack of some of my favorite indie designers and artists. Give them a follow!!! go.bsky.app/UZEN91K

I had to introduce two new players to my D&D 5E campaign. The three other players had gone through a short low-level adventure and were starting to get comfortable with each other. So its always a challenge to the group dynamics when that has to happen 1/2 blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/10/u...

Ragged Hollow may prove to be my favourite starting D&D adventure. So much in that sleepy town for players to interact with. First campaign blog here: blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/09/r...

Civ 7 first impressions: The ancient age gameplay is a lot of fun, I like the focused mechanics. Looks & sounds absolutely gorgeous. I can't get my head round the age of exploration yet (played with Xerxes/Abassids so trying next with Rome/Normans). Turned into just lots of mainland wars. 1/2

Played Pendragon for the first time last night. Really enjoyable. + Trait / passion mechanics really make for chivalrous stories - Combat system is finnicky and will take time to master Looks like we'll try a monthly game of it. Campaign blog at the link below. blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/06/p...

Trying to write more publicly about the games I run and play. So here is a little catch up post about a D&D 5E homebrew campaign I started back in November. blog.monkeyx.games/2025/02/04/u...

Happy #ZineMonth / #ZiMo25! Are you working on a project? I want to hear about it. Use this as your soapbox.

Fun first foray into Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game. The Hill tribes are lacking some important tools and try to compensate with bodies on the board. Works sometimes! Game is super fun. Possibly the most fun small scale skirmish game I've played.
