From my own experience and still being kinda new to the fandom, it really does feel like a mix-bag when meeting someone for the first time. The only thing I can say is, it’s right to be cautious, but there’s also sincerely good people that you just need to give them patience at first.

Assuming the studio is based in Japan -Art, manga, even voice acting are extremely fierce job markets iirc. People pursuing those fields will more easily find work with those games on lower pay before attempting to hit it big.
