Such awful news. Paddy Barclay has died. A superb writer, a magnificent man, a friend of thirty years. How we will miss that smile.

‘The decision [not to list the building] has allowed the local authority to wave through a wasteful and irresponsible demolition without adequate scrutiny’ C20 in The Guardian on the Centenary Building in Salford: praised then razed.

My latest for @observeruk.bsky.social. The Centenary Building in Salford was described as ‘dynamic and sophisticated’ when it won the first Stirling prize in 1996. Now it is to be demolished as part of a huge development. www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

My latest for @hyphenonline.com. With the ceasefire into its second week, a piece with British Palestinians reflecting on an uncertain future and weighing up whether to return with families to what remains of their homes and communities. hyphenonline.com/2025/01/30/b...

My latest for the @theguardian.com: "Donald Trump’s Return to Power Lays Bare the Lie that Sports Don’t Matter." Sports are politics by other means, and in the coming years, sports will be vital political terrain. www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/j...

Wenger on Bergkamp: “They say: People forget what you said. People forget what you did. But people remember how you made them feel. “And that mark you made on people, Dennis. I thank you for that”

Why didn’t anyone tell me a filter coffee at Pret was 99p?

I got my season ticket in 1992 so when I say I’ve seen some great defenders I’ve seen the best. Gabriel Magalhães stands shoulder to shoulder with the best I’ve seen.

Happy with the frequency of news reporting I’ve managed to do in 2024 but particularly proud of these pieces and hope I can continue to highlight and contribute to important conversations with my journalism next year and beyond ❤️🙏🏿

A slightly goodly morning Blueskyers. Rewatching the game now for my sins. On another note, last year I was interviewed by Baroness Lola Young for the Black Arsenal book and I finally managed to get my copy from her. Just read my contributions and feel very proud. I love being a Gooner.❤️

The decision (and it is a clear and conscious policy) of Howard Webb to totally disregard violent conduct and player safety and to fuss endlessly about shit that nobody cares about continues to irritate me profoundly.

Merry Christmas all 🤶🏿🙏🏿

Rainbow Laces is solely about making people feel welcome at football, in an industry that lags way behind society in LGBTQ+ representation That’s it. A simple message of decency And no one is forcing anyone to play in a wealthy league that has this value t.co/a8gC9WZgJa

New: Airlines will accept expired Biometric Residence Permits as valid for international travel provisionally until 31 March 2025. Over 3 million have made the switch from physical documents to EVisas but it is still not clear how many have not done so.

People have been telling both the last government and this one for months, years even, that the arbitrary deadline was too tight. It's now being delayed less than a month before it was due to kick in.

A relief the govt has seen sense & will delay the otherwise inevitably disastrous hard deadline for the planned switch to e-visas at the end of the year. The e-visa system is not ready & people with the right to be in the UK were already getting trapped by it www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

This is a positive start. People have been already left fearful of losing proof of status under plans for eVisas replacing physical documents. The system needs to ensure that no-one is left at risk. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Reports today suggest the Home Office have admitted there are many unable to access eVisas to prove the right to be in the UK, with all biometric residence permits set to expire by the end of this month. I wrote about this in my @hyphenonline.com story last month: hyphenonline.com/2024/11/07/s...

UK deprivation levels have risen to the highest in the 21st century, according to a landmark report. More than one in three children are now in poverty and a quarter of adults. It is a scandal - but so is the pretence that any of this is normal. www.theguardian.com/society/2024...
