This is a great piece - and exactly where I am. I add that I listen to sports talk radio constantly, and the underlying conservative politics are pretty evident if you are primed to notice them, and completely invisible if you aren't.

I think the Democrats would gladly take the support of Gretsky or the UFC people if they could get it. They tried to use some friendly turf, like the All The Smoke podcast, but mostly sports people are ultra-wealthy and don’t support them.

I don’t disagree w/ your piece but have you ever stepped foot at a women’s sporting event? If you want to talk about sports creating spaces for community & you allege that Democrats don’t do that at all, you’ve very clearly never been to an NWSL match. They aren’t quiet about what they stand for.

Sorry, accusatory tone is directed more at frustrations about *gestures all around me.* I’m a a Spirit season ticket holder and a diehard MLB & NFL fan too, but have scaled back on going to most male pro leagues bc of how the environments of the fan bases have so clearly changed in recent years.

Great piece Jules! I like the call to arms at the end. Sport is political whether fans (or politicians) like it or not. The key is to turn it to progression rather than reaction and hate.
