When a Pileated Woodpecker puts beak to wood, the nictitating membrane, a transparent third eyelid, covers the eye to protect it from flying debris. You can see the nictitating membrane here as it acts as safety googles for the woodpecker.

A Great Blue Heron doing some fishing yesterday. It's been warm enough lately that there has been open water, although it will be getting quite cold for the next couple of weeks. There is a nearby river that does not freeze over, so this heron may move over to that body of water to look for food.
