Democracies weren’t built around this. They depend on a shared reality, however contested, to function. When governance becomes a battle between competing fictions rather than policy and truth, institutions designed for debate and compromise become tools for enforcing narratives.

If it hasn’t happened already please someone with some artistic skills make a doormat that reads “I don’t want to talk to you. I want to talk to a lawyer.”

This is what is most disheartening. Weakening our expertise and contributing to great health disparities is not making America healthy

I suspect like many others I no longer read your work as long as it is published at the Washington Post. I unsubscribed several weeks ago. The disruption of changing jobs shouldn’t name minimized, but if you do go elsewhere I look forward to reading your work again.

Because the military isn’t the police arm of the nation. Any nation that relies on soldiers & guns to solve their political issues isn’t a democracy. The majority of those voting selected him, which requires the courts, congress and electorate to check his actions.

Probably worth keeping Hanlon’s Razor in mind when considering these actions. It might well be a combination of malice and stupidity as well.

100% they are cutting science. I spent 10 years in the Intramural program of the NIDDK. These cuts are sold as increasing efficiency by eliminating bureaucracy when it is really causing permanent harm to science.

It seems consistent with the deceptive messaging that they are not cutting science while leaving out that they are eliminating the infrastructure to conduct science

I am a rare disease research and the terms trans and cis heterozygotes come up frequently. Do you think they will let me bring my mountain bike to the reeducation camp?
