meet our reindog

great dialogue piece between great columnists www.nytimes.com/2024/12/12/o...

best feeling when non-academic colleagues just randomly bring up a colleague's work and how it is making them think in new ways – @jessicacalarco.bsky.social's Holding it Together audiobook!! congrats again www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/697130...

warning to anyone who uses the @blueark.app import from X to blueksy — takes way longer than stated and appears in feed as if uploads from years ago are happening at the moment of upload 🤦🏻‍♂️ maybe i should have just started fresh…

heads up, over the next few days @blueark.app is uploading my tweet history from x to here. apparently the ux isn’t making it look like it’s archived. sorry in advance! should be done in a day

just deleted #facebook, #tiktok, and #x/#twittter and have never felt better. glad i have bluesky left to shout this from the rooftops.

just used @blueark.app to copy over my tweets so I can delete that musky 🚮 app forever.

day 6 of posting maxine instead of weberian hullabaloo #dogs #sociology

day 5 of posting maxine, and her preference to sleep under beds rather than in them, instead of sharing an Important Thread on My Research 🧵🪡👇🏻

day 4 of posting maxine instead of digital sociological gibberish

day 3 of posting maxine instead of bourdieuian nonsense

ok this is cool

k i’m gonna keep this a dog account until i decide i like this place. here’s maxine judging me in a white sweater.

ok starter packs? academics: where’s education technology and/or platformed creation plz? 🫶🏻❤️

so what kind of social space do we want here? do we want old twitter again, with clout and profit to the loudest and most followed? do we want to repeat glorifying inflammatory takes that divide? what else could this be?

hi butterfly folks this is my dog max

testing the sky follower bridge chrome plugin (ty @lilchen.bsky.social!) to port over my fam. though, honestly, starting small here sounds kinda nice, too.

fine. let’s trust another company with the task of enabling democratic forms of interaction online.

I got married to the love of my life last month! These are some of my favorites from the special day. 🌺🌺🌺

i just created internal emotes at work for :verydemure: and :notdemure: and feel so proud but fear no one will get it or understand

i've really been leaning into ai tools to analyze my own writing-in-progress and tell me how to reconsider my overall writing strategy. like, 'say back to me what i'm saying here as an outline' – really helpful and cool

someone, presumably a sociologist, just walked by my seat on the plane while boarding and said: “matt right? Digital Divisions is SO GOOD!” i swear that felt better than any panel presentation 😂😂🥰

hey #asa2024 fam! giving a talk today on my YouTube work at 2pm. really fun spread of topics. come on by if you’re curious about cultural production and audiences! 🎥✨

what a great day at #asa2024. i love sociology and i love sociologists!

hey #asa2024, if you’re looking for a quick and delicious lunch there’s an awesome little strip of chinese food shops and other small businesses seconds from the convention center — so so good

ok, #asa2024! let’s do this ❤️

hit 1000 citations today! i know these numbers are silly, but it does still feel cool that my work resonates with folks out there – especially as someone working outside of academia ❤️

trying to find the fire to write again after quite a long hiatus. i remember how this place used to feel like a place i could share articles as i read with reactions; find and benefit from nerdy discussions; and amplify others' work.

do people still use this thing?

hi everyone. meet the newest member of our family: maxine! (max for short) 🐾❤️

this is so embarrassing but discovering 'copy table' in stata 14 years into my career has just changed my professional life

a month ago, i got promoted at youtube! 8 years now at google, too. finally had a chance to celebrate it with my husb.

so is everyone allowed to email every asa listserv now?

2/26 deadline - submit to our consumers and consumption panel on racial and ethnic boundaries!

on the one hand, i’m grateful when studies of schools and inequality bring cultural sociological thinking into their work. on the other, so often do people throw in so many cultural definitions (or don’t even define it) and theories that it feels like soup. and not good soup.

if you’re ever looking for examples of foucault’s biopower at work look no further than elementary school classrooms

crunchyroll has taken over my life and i am now unrelentingly deep into black clover

I have a new job! In addition to managing research on live and gaming on YouTube, I’m also overseeing research on community and teen experiences. I’m so excited to be working on features so directly related to my scholarship. And if you publish on these topics, send me your work!

hey, sociologists! you may be scrambling – as i have been – to finish up your submissions for #asa2024 in beautiful montreal (can't wait to have those bagels, again). consider submitting your papers to C&C's panel "Racial and Ethnic Boundaries and Consumption." <3

question for my faculty friends: as you level up in academia, do you find *more* or *less* time for writing? trying to see how similar or not it is to industry life...
