they even have to frame it like they just unearthed something original, and also where the hell are the editors saying, 'nah, let's not use the word "success" and that man's name in the same sentence.' Every one of these words you use is a CHOICE nyt, and we see you. we are watching you fail us.

More distant events include the dredging of the lake and armoring of shorelines in order to create boat access. I think many of us are familiar with the short term gains and long term losses in a battle for stability waged via concrete.

More recent events in the story include individual people trying to resist this change, to try to protect what they've built and have personally invested along this shoreline. Much of the rest is actually public land.

I have a love/hate relationship with systems talk b/c of this challenge. But Donella Meadows nailed this when she emphasized narrative as key to systems change. Changing narratives is hard and very political, but it starts with each of us seeing ourselves as agents and tellers of Earth stories.

It's not just that it's a way of reiterating our hierarchical social structure that celebrates individual freedom and will, but ultimately it disempowers. We all need to tell the ecological stories of people and other beings and Earth, and make ourselves one of many agents in them.
