I wouldn't have understood this reference without #HATM

IR Fiction Project went REALLY well last semester, and it was really cool to see students engage with the material. For the spring semester, I'd like to run a similar project with nonfiction this time. Of course, that means I'll need more books... www.donorschoose.org/project/fore...

This week's reading selections. Managing to keep on top of school prep, too...*almost* to the point of pulling ahead.

Forgot to point out earlier that Ben Whishaw (his voice, at least) and Brendan Gleeson appeared together in Paddington 2. (Took the young'uns to the third movie last weekend.) :) #HATM

I mean, it's not funny, but when the whale popped yet up again, I'm like "Now you know how WE feel you damn dirty apes..." #HATM

Donner Boat, Party of Four... #HATM

Melville's right. "Moby Dick" is a slog... #HATM

Tom Holland has gone through three pairs of pants in this scene alone... #HATM

It's all fun and games until the whales hit back... #HATM

Bond fussing at the Ecudorans to "Speak English!" Americans haven't changed much... #HATM

Doesn't Pollard know that the best sign of a great shiphandler is to not get in a situation that requires great shiphandling? Wait, wrong century for that... #HATM

Well, they found the weather, and the captain has moved from asshole to dumbass... #HATM

Is the Captain intentionally being an asshole because the First Mate knows what he's doing? #HATM

Suddenly reminded of an incident I read about in grad school. During the French and Indian War, a British ranger unit composed of a mix of colonists and indigenous people set out in a whaleboat to go cut out a French ship. A whale surfaced nearby and the crew spontaneously shifted targets. #HATM

1. "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World." Historical fiction, but still. Introduced me to some great books. 2. Gumbo #HATM

For tonight's #HATM, I present a nerd who pitched his thesis abstract to a USNA Symposium in 2021 expecting they would never select them to speak. He was wrong, and nervous AF. :) Barron's prow-ship I speak about was partially inspired by the Essex story... www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDKC...

Been wanting to try this one out, actually...

Productive snow day in the works: grading/lesson prep for next week, fan club bits, and especially gumbo. Getting some extra reading in, too.

Found this in my morning reading and thought the "Lawfare" portion could come in handy for IR class next time around. Thinking an examination of the Quasi-War from a lawfare perspective would make for an interesting paper...as though I have the time... :) digital-commons.usnwc.edu/nwc-review/v...

Had a dream that I got accepted to present at McMullen again...and that they moved the symposium from Annapolis to Wisconsin.

Barely keeping on top of prep for both courses this week Was *this* close to wearing out this AM...then overheard a student telling her friends how much they like my class, and two kids from last year asked if I taught anything besides World 1 so they could request me again. #DoingSomethingRight

Finished the math, and worked an average of 54.69 hours per week during the first semester. For the first month, that was pushing 65-70, but been organizing and getting things done a little faster ever since. Want to try and see how close I can get to a 50 hour average by the end of the year.

So far, been sticking to the half hour of reading for pleasure after work. (More than that on the weekends, obviously.) Here's the current list, minus "A Call to Insurrection" by Weber/Zahb/Pope on the Kindle.

Just submitted a paper proposal to the 2025 McMullen Naval History Symposium. Guess that means its research time! :) #AmWriting

Several of us have said how certain situations/characters are exaggerated. Could that be intentional because too much of that crap persists today, and these scenes are meant to rile us up into beating more of it down? Apologies for the random musing... #HATM

"Can she help you with your bags?" #HATM

Now this is a good bit...officers knowing the strengths/talent of their troops. #HATM

White colonels need something more to do... #HATM

Every time I see the corner of Abram's letter sticking up, I feel a little stitch... #HATM

That bit about a single transport with no escort seems a tad over the top. #HATM

I really need to find Charity Adams' book and find out if there was really an asshat as big as General Halt... #HATM

"They are already of the opinion that the negro woman is dumb, inferior, and lazy." Interesting how the stereotype became "lazy" once it became illegal to own people and work them to death... #HATM

This notification letter scene was bad enough, but it least it doesn't piss you off like the delivery man in "A League of Their Own..." #HATM

Mary Katherine in the little known 1943 edition of "Mean Girls..." #HATM
