I do daily silent reading with my CP classes, but not my AP classes because I'm on a 4x4 and only see my students for half a year and I need that time to cover other material. When I had them all year I did.

Here you can find the schedule of what we'll be sharing and discussing over the first weekβincluding some suggestions from folks on here!
Let's read and talk about some poems. And let's do it together.

I feel like I need to read it now, too. @garrt.bsky.social suggested a Bleak House book club.

Yes, please start one! I now want to read it, but obviously need others to discuss it with!

I emailed them the list before school is out, so they can come talk to me if they want and check out a book from my classroom or the textbook room.

And that's what I do. I encourage them to read a book or two over the summer.

For AP Lit I give a suggested reading list, and suggest they read 1 or 2 books from the list or 1 or 2 books of their choosing. I'm on a 4x4 so some of these kids I won't see until Jan. I don't give a gotcha assignment when I do meet them. I just want them to read.

I read the first page and went: I've read this. I don't remember what happens, but I know I read it.

When I went for a walk today, I picked up a book from one of the many free book libraries in my neighborhood. Because you know I needed another book.

You might be able to find an AP African American Studies group on here or Facebook that could help. I teach AP Lit and am basically only on Facebook for the AP Lit chat group there. The group members willingly provide ideas, lesson plans, and feedback.

#ProudBlue As we watch what is happening in LA & prep for the #NoKings protests Saturday, we must keep awareness that 47 is looking for ANY excuse to invoke the Insurrection Act & declare martial law. Raise your voice, but stay peaceful & stay safe.

I'm sure it is. I loved On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous. I need to save this until summer break when I can truly delve in to it.

Yes, they have said that to me when I have asked why they aren't willing to say things out loud. They said what if I am wrong? I said and what's wrong with that? It's ok to possibly to wrong because then we can discuss it.

I hope so. When I teach Frankenstein, my students all want to see a movie of it, and I say sorry none of them are worth watching (except Young Frankenstein but for completely different reasons) because they aren't close enough.
comment in response to
post
Yep, and most movies on Frankenstein are then based on that original movie and not on the actual book.

I have definitely seen a decline in my classroom. In my AP Lit classroom especially. There used to be so much discussion and dialogue in those classes and now it's pulling teeth to get those kids to talk. It can be painful and so awkward.

It is really hard. I've clicked on the thread to read it and then I don't see all of it even though it says there's like seven responses. I'll see two.
