I have given it up in my classes. We have university and college classes in Ontario for grades 11 and 12. University level classes will read, college ones - nope. We start class with 15 mins of reading. Many come late to skip it. I went back to a core novel. I get it, but no. Too much fake reading.

Don't have cats but would like to be able to enjoy my deck and back yard. Being as mom is in hospital, may happen. Also want to toss papers... we'll see.

Will they be showing "Footloose"? Or is the next pronouncement that light might lead to enlightenment and so back to the dark ages we go??? 🙄

I think that's my plan every week of the year! I drive in thinking, "what am I going to do today?"

I blame never having heard the word "no" and having everything handed to them (newcomer kids are experts at manipulating parents). They have the newest phone, ear buds. They say "no money" but never bring a lunch to school. Disrespect? Yup. Apathy? Yup. "Scamminess"? yup. 3 more weeks.

After 20 years, I wanted to go home and cry. I feel like Sisyphus - day in, day out. I have students telling me they will use ChatGPT, students that DO use it (or a variation). I blame the pandemic for this; I blame no repercussions for behaviour; I blame not going to work but home to play games; >

Are really not the best way to teach. See them every day for 4 months and off you go. In one of my classes, 1/2 are IEP. Discussions? none. The other day, looking at my students, I thought, "What am I doing here?" No response of any kind. I was asking AND answering the questions. >

Kittle. Drama? none. Poetry? very little. Quickwrites galore. I'm old school - I've taken to teaching how I want. My classes did a core novel so that we have a common reference. Thankfully, we don't have yearly standardized tests, but I feel that I am lowering expectations every year. & semesters >

In another school I worked at (same demographics almost) the kids didn't do work because they worked. THIS school, the kids don't do work because they don't want to. I tell them: zero in, zero out. I teach English: no core novels; instead micro mentor texts, our heads were "inspired" by Penny >

They don't attend. They give false phone numbers to contact parents. Parents don't understand English or the system. The attitude of those in front of me is 'I'm here - even if late - so I need a pass'. They don't do or hand in work and I have VERY few deadlines (see selfish reason above). BUT...>

was a motto in my board. And then the idea that we need to promote students as much as we can. I teach the same courses every year and I selfishly want ALL my students to pass because I don't want to see them again next semester or next year. And STILL almost half my students will fail. Why? >

Students in these situations have a lot to deal with: language, routines, values, mores, independence, being the go-between for parents and the new place. BUT, I've been at this for 20+ years and when I think about what I DID do with my students and what I do now, I want to cry. "Students first" >

Students in elementary school here can be "promoted" or "passed". Promoted means they earned the year, passed means they have been moved on to stay with their peers. Elementary students don't repeat grades. The HS I teach at is in a high intake area: lots of new immigrants, ESL and LEAP students.>

Thanks. I'm there every day. We're working on getting her to walk again. It's all up to her, in the end. These last 2 weeks have seen much progress. I have to remind myself it's only been 4.5 months.

After a really crappy day on Thursday where I questioned why I was still doing this after 20 years, I'm happy today is Friday. I went to see my mom at the hospital and am always happy at her progress after her stroke in January.

You don't like a book? Don't read it! Book banning is a slippery slope. Librarians are trained to evaluate materials and choose appropriately. I know, I am one.

I keep telling my husband I'm just going to pull up a dumpster when he goes. It's bad enough dealing with my mom, and she's not dead. She had a stroke and is in hospital. But she never met a box she didn't like - or a piece of paper she didn't write on.

I have everything done in class & still get AI. Run everything through 3+ checkers. Weaker students: AI to pass. ELLs: AI to get into the regular stream. Those from places where "by any means necessary" is the norm see no problem. They tell me they will cheat. I say "enjoy your youtube dentist".

I LOVE that movie! Watching it in the theatre made me read every book I could get my hands on about Mozart. F. Murray Abraham is scarily rational.
