For me, it is also ok to criticize police who use their jobs to apply “overwhelming force.”

A million years ago when Kid1 moved from private elementary school to public middle school the culture shock was something. Me to teachers: “Hi! I’m Kid1’s dad!!” “So?” 😮

"Grants to young investigators would be set at $150,000 per year,". This is an idea similar to the R29/FIRST which was trashed in *1998* since it was quite obviously limiting new investigators via apparent kindness.

Now is a great time to be building a collection. Most stores are reducing shelf space dedicated to physical media, so the bargain bins at Walmart/Best Buy have been particularly fertile, and with most people switching to streaming, your pawnshops and second hand stores are swimming with great picks

Distrust of public schools more stark. In 2022, just 28% of Americans said they had strong confidence in public schools—with only 14% Republicans expressing that level of confidence

“In 2022, it was the most-viewed animated series on HBO Max worldwide. In 2025, it was among the top 2 most watched shows on Max in multiple countries. While not as mainstream as it once was, "Rick and Morty" continues to have a strong cult following, especially among younger demographic”

Scientists are my people, and my heart goes out to you. At the same time, you’ve expressed the precise emotional landscape that motivates Trump followers…

Sure…but then you have to contend with the counter-counter argument that education is a failed enterprise, because of a haphazard response to changing times 😬

It’s so easy to do. In a cocktail shaker I added 2 tbs of tahini, 1 tbs maple syrup, a long shot of espresso and a bit of water (or use regular coffee), pinch of salt. Shake well. Add ice and shake well again. Pour out into a glass with the ice.

“Yeah, but not fundamentally” argument may be true… and today we have Rick Sanchez quip sarcastically but truthfully: “School is not a place for smart people, Morty!”

Discussion not argument (do we still do that?): Calculators, computers, cell phones, and touch screen black boards have infused our schools and have “changed everything”

Isn't that how Renaissances work? 😂😭

What’s going on is a decimation. I’m seeing career choices changing in real time. And yet, I remain hopeful that there will be a renaissance after this dark age

As an amateur astronomer, I think you have the most fascinating job! It’s a disaster what is going on and you have my sympathy. Yet I bet you $1 that in a year, amazing progress in physics and cosmology will transform your research Hang in there!!
