National Park Service reverses course after outcry about Underground Railroad erasure

NO ONE should stand for this.

DOGE has just completely gutted the IMLS, firing all staff, closing down their email addresses, and leaving any funding for 2025 in question. bookriot.com/imls-gutted/

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

Fun fact for our SpaceForce friends -- a lot of the time, clean hands are better than white gloves for handling fragile documents. #TheMoreYouKnow

This is blood-boiling. Charles Rogers was awarded the Medal of Honor in Vietnam after being wounded three times leading the defense of a position. Google his name and the entry below comes up. When you click, you'll see the page has been deleted and the URL changed to include "DEI medal."

Just thinking about what the US looked like before the EPA existed

The cowardice of the GOP has been astounding 👇 #TraitorTrump

People laughed a few days ago when @jamellebouie.net said we might not have flu shots next year, but:

Breaking: Trump's full trans military ban has just dropped. Quickly reading it, it appears to be a full separation from the military for all transgender military members, and states being trans is inconsistent with "honesty, humility, uniformity, and integrity." A sad day for this nation.

Due by 3/3/25: “Public History + ?: A Creative Showcase” invites NCPH Annual Meeting attendees with a creative practice (related to their #PublicHistory work or not) to share their work with their colleagues. Learn more and apply at ncph.org/conference/c.... #CFP

This is what is happening to us Feds. We are normal.people who, like you, just want to dona honest days work, put food on the table and a roof over our heads. WE ARE NOT YOUR ENEMY. We are your neighbors, friends, family.

OK so here's some fun in a dark time. The American Folklife Center's Web Culture Web Archive collects cultural phenomena from the Internet. Enjoy. www.loc.gov/collections/...

1. Multiple hospital systems are complying with an unlawful executive order with dubious enforcement mechanisms and pulling their trans kids off care. While most have not, those that have are harming their trans patients. The latest from Mira Lazine. Subscribe to support our journalism.

This legit keeps me up at night as I'm ginning out mad quantities of cover letters right now.

I am sad, again, for America's soul. I'm not gonna say "We're better than this," cuz lord knows we have a long and storied history of not being better than this. But we should be better than this.

The process of managing a small museum is the process of realizing that anything you're grappling with is something a peer institution surely has to have dealt with before... And then being unable to find that specific peer so you have to figure it all out again anyway.

1. The first major federal fight over transgender people post-election is here. A federal provision has been added into the NDAA that would pull certain healthcare from transgender servicemembers' families. If Democrats stay unified, it could be blocked. Subscribe to support my journalism.

Kind of a vulnerable confession, but I think one thing I love about collecting books for my home library is that they’re really the only things that are just mine. My family isn’t interested in them, nobody touches them. They stay where I put them. I can’t say that about anything else, really.

Response to Ramaswamy’s Tweet To Mr. Ramaswamy and Mr. Musk, The Altnps Coalition strongly opposes your celebration of the Supreme Court’s decision in Loper Bright v. Raimondo. 1/6

Just fucking stop it.

“The fact that ‘DEI’ has pissed off so many people means that it’s working, that it’s making tangible change in the world. The backlash against DEI work should be considered a metric of success, not signs of failure.”

Whatever other horrible things the attack on McBride has done, every day that a trans person is the one talking about trans people is a win, IMO.

But, yes, clearly, of course, let's totally let her run ED. Anyone seeing a theme here? www.cnn.com/2024/11/21/b...

On TDoR of all days.

1. The Republican Party's panic over Sarah McBride in a bathroom shows it was never about sports or kids. They cannot help but to indulge in its cruelest impulses when a transgender person becomes an equal. Now, Dems have an opportunity to flip the script. Subscribe to support my journalism.

Many of us are echoing @timothysnyder.bsky.social's lesson in On Tyranny, "Do not obey in advance.” A no less vital admonition that deserves attn: STAND OUT “...without that unease, there is no freedom. The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow."

Flashback post.

You know, "Texas" derives from a word for "friendship." Ain't no friendship here.

Yeah fuck Seth Moulton.

I remember the morning after Trump was elected the first time, I had a school group of maybe 3rd graders at the Underground Railroad site where I was working. The program was about doing the right thing, even when it's hard. I think about that a lot.
