Probably the most clever sign I saw at #StandUpForScience #StandUpForScience2025

The @standupforscience.bsky.social DC rally is on. What we are hearing from around the country: "this is big!" "biggest rally I have seen around here in years and years" The public cares about medical research--and students, GenZ, and other people too are ready to stand up.

#FossilFriday Gomphotherium phippsi, from the Middle Miocene Valentine Fm of Nevada @denvermuseumns.bsky.social

The Paleontological Society @paleosoc.bsky.social has issued a statement to the paleontology community referencing recent federal policy changes & reaffirming the importance of diversity for paleontological studies and for the health of the scientific community in general. 🧪

Gray Fossil Site is crazy because nowhere else do you have red pandas, hornless rhinos, wolverines, alligators, tapirs, sabercats, mastodons, and now a cat-sized flying squirrel living in the same place.

A friend of mine from Badlands National Park just lost her position due to indiscriminant firing. Watch if you can! youtu.be/E1ykyUpvCDY?...

Heartening conservation news! Wolves are recolonizing their ancient Californian hunting grounds. History in motion. Historic Move For Wolf Conservation: 12 Collared Gray Wolves Have Been Released In Northern California worldanimalnews.com/a-historic-m... #California #conservation #wolf #wolves

Me: Oooo. Leidy's holotype of PANTHERA ATROX!!! P. atrox:... Me, whispering in awe: (you're so awesome...) At Academy of Sciences in Philadelphia. Happy #fossilfriday.

“You should have never started it.” Such ignominious ignorance. Such betrayal of our ally. Such a cowardly surrender.

I think anyone who's been paying attention knows this. But it's worth stating clearly. The idea that any of Elon's wilding spree is being done in the name of efficiency is absurd on its face because the terminations are virtually all being done based on duration of service because that creates ...

Bright passionate people who wanted to dedicate their lives to public service were fired in a mass email over the holiday weekend. This has absolutely nothing to do with efficiency, fraud, waste, or abuse. And your life will be worse because of it.

so far going anti-woke leads to less money and planes falling out of the sky

Just hanging out here with the holotype of Dinobastis (=Homotherium) serum. No biggie. The ANSP collection is a wonderful time machine back to 19th century paleontology. I'm sure I'll get to 21st century eventually, but please let me wallow in the past for a bit longer.

Our new discovery, led by @shorouqalashqar.bsky.social , has unveiled a new 30-million-year-old species of apex predator, #Bastetodon, in Egypt’s Fayum Desert! Check out the study in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. @matt-borths.bsky.social @erikseiffert.bsky.social #SallamLab #MUVP

This administration has convinced half the country that the real problem isn’t billionaires who evade taxes and collect government handouts but the working class who pay taxes and get nothing in return.

Even worse incompetence: they accidentally fired, then apparently today un-fired, hundreds of the people who manage America's nuclear weapons.

RFK Jr was confirmed. There is a lesson here for the future. The only chance that science had to stop RFK was a public relations strategy—to mobilize enough of the public that people not paying attention to politics would learn that he is a disaster. We failed at that. Let’s fix it and do better. 🧪

Heartbreaking news… Tonight, many of our friends were let go, and tomorrow, even more will follow. Word is that all probationary employees at NPS will be let go. 😭

JUST IN: Federal judges orders HHS, CDC, and FDA to restore “by no later than 11:59 pm” today their websites and datasets to pre-January 30th status. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Weird. Because when I was speaking out against Project 2025 during the campaign, several Very Serious Senior Scientists explicitly told me that there's no way this would happen and I was being silly for scaring people about the possibility.

You are not powerless, and he is not unstoppable. Look at, and learn from, the funding freeze and how quickly he was forced to surrender.

🚨RED ALERT for 🧪: The Trump NIH just gashed indirect costs. This is a direct attack on universities. “Pursuant to this Supplemental Guidance, there will be a standard rate of 15% across all NIH grants for indirect costs.” 😮 Just a devastating Friday night news dump. #scicomm #academicaky

Received a letter from POTUS today purporting to remove me as Commissioner and Chair of the FEC. There's a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn't it. I've been so fortunate to serve the American people and stir up some good trouble along the way. That's not changing anytime soon.

#HappyGroundhogDay! (Although Ceratogaulus shown here is NOT a marmot like today's groundhogs; it's a member of an extinct group of burrowing rodents.)

Yes, this administration is dangerous and cruel, but they are also shockingly dim and incompetent. Opportunities are everywhere. Make everything as hard as possible. Resist every demand. Refuse entry without a warrant. Don’t take the buyout. Their problem solving skills are 📉

We CT scanned thousands of vertebrates from US natural history collections and made them freely available. Countless people have used the data for research (>200 pubs) and to learn anatomy/morphology. www.morphosource.org/projects/000...

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

Thought I’d celebrate my first #FossilFriday on Bluesky! Here are some worn and unworn teeth of a desmostylian, a member of the only extinct order of marine mammals. As someone who thoroughly enjoys tooth morphology, these bubble-shaped teeth are crazy to me #fossils #mammals #paleontology

#FossilFriday A small herd of the oreodont Miniochoerus, nestling in death. At the Tate Geological Museum in Wyoming.

Knowledge is knowing that orcas are the largest dolphin. Wisdom is not saying “orcas aren’t whales, they’re dolphins.” Because dolphins are whales.

Thank you @taorminalepore.bsky.social & congrats to the team! Read our paper to find out how biomechanical demands on the carnivoran skeleton associate with trade-offs across multiple skeletal elements, ecological traits. Interesting implications for understanding paleoecology of extinct predators!
