Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow. —Langston Hughes

It wasn’t until a decade later after I came to Cville and had a roommate with GD record collection that I discovered the glorious oeuvre of the Grateful Dead. What a long strange trip it’s been!

“Uncle John’s Band” blew me away the first time I heard it and that time it wasn’t even being sung by the Grateful Dead. It was just a local girl singing for her supper at the Morningstar Inn, a little vegetarian restaurant in Atlanta in the early 1970s.

“Informed by the attorney that Khalil, who graduated last December, was in the United States as a permanent resident with a green card, the agent said they were revoking that too . . . An immigration court can revoke a green card but government departments do not have that power.”

“Mr. Duffy said the young staff of Mr. Musk’s team was trying to lay off air traffic controllers. . . . At another point, Mr. Musk insisted that people hired under diversity, equity and inclusion programs were working in control towers. Mr. Duffy pushed back and Mr. Musk did not add details . . .”🤔🤯

Wear black. Millions of Americans are grieving the death of our democracy. Treat this joint session like the funeral of Lady Liberty and pray that she will rise like Lazarus.

Or Marian Anderson’s glorious rendition of “My Country, 'Tis of Thee” projected onto the front wall of the chamber, followed by Dems singing the third verse: “No more shall tyrants here with haughty steps appear . . .” www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAON...

Or even better, sing the last verse of “Lift every voice and sing,” beginning with “God of our weary years, God of our silent tears” and ending with “True to our native land.”

All Dems should stand together just as he reaches the podium and sing the first verse of “America the Beautiful,” ending with “And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!”

And it will soon get worse. Abigail Spanberger was on Maddow this week and quoted very scary statistics from a new UVA study, saying “a 10% cut in Virginia’s federal workforce is about 39,000 people and it is 6 billion dollars in lost economic output in our state.” www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ4z...

His haunting words for our town: “The lynching of John Henry James will be far more damaging to the community than it will be to the alleged criminal. His troubles are o’er; those of the community have just begun.” virginiachronicle.com?a=d&d=RP1898...

They are heroes defending their families and friends from cowardly bullies: “The agitators wore body armor, carried AR-15 rifles and waved swastika flags. They arrived as children were being let out from class at Lincoln Heights Elementary School and marched just blocks away.”
