Absolutely. You can and should oppose these Nazi wannabes on moral grounds, but you should also oppose them for purely selfish reasons: they will fuck up and destroy the country.

I am talking about empires, not emperors. If Hitler had made it to the end of his natural life still in control of Germany, it could be said that he had some competence, but he cocked it all up. Anyone who ruled longer and had an empire that lasted longer than 0 years after them was more successful.
comment in response to post
Exactly! The right wing in America worships the 2 biggest losers in history. How could they be anything but losers themselves?!
comment in response to post
Yes, I agree that the way the Nazis went to war with so many belligerents at once was guaranteed to fail. However, some rulers have started with less and ended with much more. My whole point is that the Nazis had no idea how to run a country or create an empire.
comment in response to post
The Nazis held power for about 12 years. As far as empires go, that is loser shit. They were forced to unconditionally surrender and the main thing they are remembered for is killing their own citizens. That's like calling someone a good marksman for shooting themselves.
comment in response to post
Important to remember that the Nazis were terrible at running things. There's too much mythologizing about how good German science and warcraft was. It was not. That's why they lost the war. If Hitler had been a good military leader, he would have won.

Joe Rogan is an excellent example of how the aesthetics and messaging of fascism were wrapped in the packaging of an "everyman" that claimed to be a neutral party. He is entirely controlled by a right-wing messaging apparatus, but he appears to speak as an unaligned person to a general audience.

I think it is hard to see why the voters have become as stupid as they are. While racism and sexism are a lot of it, it also has to do with the breakdown in communication, truth, and expertise and the rise of conspiracy thinking.

Yes. I have my whole life. I see things differently because I heard about hypernormalization in Russia, then saw it happen here since 2014 at least. It's hard to unsee.
comment in response to post
It's already happening, though.
comment in response to post
No, it is happening right now. Pay attention to media and you will see it. The Adam Curtis documentary "Hypernormalization" describes the effect well.
comment in response to post
It's based on hyper normalization. It's a process where you simultaneously message to your allies and opposition in an attempt to undermine your opponents messaging. You intentionally deploy people with messages that appeal to the right, but don't lead anywhere useful like "don't vote."
comment in response to post
I know. He was a piece of shit. The new guy is as racist and worse along many other dimensions.
comment in response to post
The point is not to get them to agree, it is to take a weapon away from the opposition. Muddy the water. It's the same hyper normalization that the right uses, but for patriotism and god. Make it impossible to tell the signal from the noise.

That's fine. Your life sounds hard. I don't presume to know what you should do. I know what I would do and what I think would be marginally better. That's all. I am sorry for the pain and loss under the Biden admin. He was a bad president, too.

I am not trying to be obtuse, but how did your choice help you avoid eating shit?
comment in response to post
I didn't vote for Trump, yet people like me are being forced to eat shit anyway.
comment in response to post
Yes. But given a choice between which shit sandwich, I would prefer the taste of the blue one to the red one. The red one is making my existence illegal. The blue one just made existence gradually harder.

Example: it is our American and Christian duty to welcome immigrants with open arms. Jesus says blah blah blah tear down the camps!
comment in response to post
I do not think we need to placate the churches, I think Democrats should steal the language of holiness to dilute and confuse the Christian electorate. I also think they should drape everything they do in patriotic (but meaningless) flags and "American values" language.
comment in response to post
It's undeniable, for me anyway, that life is better when the blue shit runs the government.

You have to. I pass for a woman most places, but I have to look at folks like they just shit their pants when they misgender me. It's a real privilege to pass, though. Earlier in my transition I would get cussed out or called slurs if I stood up for myself.

There's already a model out there that worked for other countries: build public housing owned by municipal authorities. The time has come to ignore the Faircloth Amendment and work to repeal it.

Seems to me if homelessness is already at a record high, HUD was dangerously underfunded before the cuts.

Countries that want independence should stop using Starlink. The US is an evil empire.

Yeah, but most people suck, and to get a majority you need to win votes from some real shitlords.

It's like when the cops murder a person who has committed no crime because they "reasonably assumed" that person was a "criminal threat." You don't have to be a trans woman to be beat up or killed on the pretext of anti-trans laws. More policing means more opportunities for state violence.
comment in response to post
I'm so sorry that happened, and that it happened so close to you. I think you and I are trying to do different things with our posts, and that is probably appropriate given our different experiences.
comment in response to post
I hear you, but I want to give cis women the space to feel threatened by anti-trans laws and police tactics. I think it is an opportunity to force empathy. I guess I have gotten cynical. I need people to hear that you cannot police trans people without increased and vile policing of cis people.
comment in response to post
I feel the same.
comment in response to post
You're a real one. I think it's important for solidarity to understand that even when we are victims, there is someone who needs our help. We're all in this together.
comment in response to post
Yes, we will be killed and attacked by the state disproportionately. However, I believe the numbers are so imbalanced that at least as many cis women will be killed and attacked by police as we will. Other people will pay disproportionate tolls, like Black women and masc queer women.
comment in response to post
Yeah, Utilitarianism.
comment in response to post
I think we have to look at intent vs. effect. A law and a system is what it does. More cis women will be targeted by anti trans actions in public spaces because of the population imbalance. I think we have to see that as a feature not a bug for the people who made these laws.

I think we can put the emotions of life forms, including pain, on a hierarchical scale. I think we can assess the utility of human joy, nutrition and pleasure against a creature's life and suffering and decide taking that life and causing that suffering is justified. Maybe it isn't.

Even these inbred MAGA hicks are going to start getting it if they feel the pain everyone else has for a decade. We have to let the toddlers touch the stove, apparently.

I have my qualms about factory farming, but I am not changing how I eat today. Honestly, I care less about animal deaths than I do about eating animal proteins. I love eating animal proteins and plan to continue doing so.

Yes, they should come out as fully anti-genocide and call for regime change in Israel, both on moral and religious grounds. Unfortunately, I think that will be too much for some of them to move, but I still think a moral wedge could work as a tactic regardless.

Hey, buddy, I am using a non-serious and ironic tone. It is a kind of cadence found on the Internet to deflect when someone turns a joke into something serious. I am in fact very interested in learning to make vegan muffins, because "Trump take egg" and I love a good muffin.

Yeah, because they do. At least if you read their scriptures. They are all about social cohesion, alms for the poor, doing what's right instead of what is self-serving, sanctity of marriage (yuck for me, but at least it's an attack vector for Trump) and loads of other stuff.
