two mystery game recs, both Obra Dinn likes:
- Utter A Name: supernatural murder mystery at a wedding (1-bit 2d navigation)
- Type Help: you are invited to a dinner party by a stranger, and when you arrive no one knows the man who invited you. (text based browser game, no music or graphics)

likely to be the most boring answer here, but I’ve been keeping a OneNote, organized alphabetically by room. screenshotting a lot, with some notes added when I want to remember my thoughts in the moment. created a few tables to aid in the solving some puzzles, e.g. missing letter

when will there be real accountability in the games industry?!?! the past two years of carnage has set the medium back so far, it’s incomprehensible

Ender Magnolia is a technically good and unoffensive metroidvania (except combat, which was exceptional). but for some reason it just didn’t make me “feel” like the first game did!
Operator was a fun thriller ride, albeit with a bit less interactivity than I had hoped for. but it has great twists!

Metaphor had promise; I still enjoyed it, but it fumbled by the end. progression seemed flexible at first, but actually each character has a “canon” class. bit of a bummer
beat just the 1st Ace Attorney of the trilogy, I’m now very eager to try the rest! good foundation here, just needs polish

Roottrees was an amazing mystery game, favorite since Obra Dinn. the 2nd chapter was more uneven than the 1st, but still highly recommend it!
Edith Finch was a little morbid for sure, but an interesting reflection on mortality & how to spend our time on this planet. not my genre, but glad I played!

playing GTA: VC & RDR1 in ‘25 was fascinating. VC was miserable; really cynical, horrible characters, clunky combat. the “chaos sim” elements were cool, but still a negative experience.
RDR had more nuanced characters, was more hopeful, and just more polished. not a perfect game, but better!

and of course, how can we get through a list of anticipated titles without the following 😬

here’s a few bonus ones that may be ‘25 titles, but I think are more likely to show up in ‘26:

tracking my GotY list was so fun, can’t wait to do it again in ‘25.
have some titles I’m looking forward to (some have already released!), but I’m sure that by EoY my list will be filled with titles I haven’t heard of yet!
but still, here’s some of what I’m looking forward to/ enjoying in ‘25!
