What's an acceptable (non-crazy) number of times to refresh a journal's manuscript tracking page while waiting for reviewer comments on a resubmission? Asking for a friend.

Don’t miss our latest 📝 with @chrislisgaras.bsky.social & Rick Staba on high-frequency oscillations in preclinical 🧠 disease models, with guidelines for recording, detection and analysis. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Announcing an official fundraising campaign to support my lab’s research on APOE4 and Alzheimer’s disease: joinus.cuimc.columbia.edu/participant/.... This campaign is itself an experiment of sorts. But mostly, it's an attempt to save my lab during an unprecedented time of turmoil in academia. 1/9

Are you looking for a faculty job? We are hiring in my department at Roswell Park NOW. Contact me for details as I await the formal ad. (Please RT.)

What does the APOE 'lipid droplet-ome' look like??? Check out our new paper to find out! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... Thanks to first authors @cassifriday.bsky.social and @iostephens.bsky.social +help from Scott Gordon @morganti.bsky.social and @cohenlaboratory.bsky.social labs

New work from our postdoc Seraphina Solders shows patterns of blood-brain barrier leakage in cognitively normal APOE4 carriers. BBB breakdown correlated with microstructural brain injury only in groups with high Alzheimer's disease risk (APOE4+, amyloid+, women) www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Should mention that we are fortunate to have funding to support him, but thinking of all the other bright scientists who are not so lucky. No words…

A brilliant postdoc in my lab just received a final termination notice from NIA on his MOSAIC F32. He got an impact score of 20. Absolutely devastating.

Finally registered—looking forward to the inaugural Gordon Research Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease next month. Excited to connect with old and new friends in the AD field!

How does APOE change your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease? At least partially by changing the function of immune cells in your brain 🧠🧬 New paper out in @natcomms.nature.com today: www.nature.com/articles/s41... @ukdri.ac.uk @kingsioppn.bsky.social @imperialbrains.bsky.social

Exciting work @blurtonjoneslab.bsky.social: CRISPR-engineered iPSC-microglia use the plaque-responsive CD9 promoter to deliver Aβ-degrading neprilysin across the brain-- reducing plaques, inflammation & synaptic loss. A promising new cell therapy platform for AD www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Thrilled (and honestly relieved) to receive the NOA from NIA for our project to dig deeper into the neuronal mechanisms of APOE4-induced network dysfunction.

Why do the brain’s professional phagocytes stop clearing amyloid in Alzheimer’s disease? Can we restore microglial superpowers & rescue dying neurons in AD? YES, by stopping DGAT2-mediated lipid droplet formation! Checkout our latest manuscript @cp-immunity.bsky.social 👇🏼 www.cell.com/immunity/abs...

Hiring! We're looking for a postdoc to join my lab at the @ukdri.ac.uk @ucl.ac.uk We’re investigating neuronal and circuit dysfunction in Alzheimer's, and developing innovative new treatments. Apply here👇 shorturl.at/LpCAq

ATTENTION Has anyone received a NOA this week (other than a no-cost extension? Please DM me or respond on signal jeremymberg.78 THANK YOU

Where does Alzheimer’s begin in the brain? Our study in @cp-neuron.bsky.social shows that the earliest amyloid-related neuronal dysfunction emerges selectively in deep cortical layers (layers 5/6), targeting fast-spiking parvalbumin interneurons via reductions in NPTX2. www.cell.com/neuron/fullt...

Astrocytic GLUT1 cKO in adult mice causes no pathology or behavioral deficits, increases astrocytic glucose consumption >2x, and reduces infarct size after stroke

Our paper in Nature Comms is now online! Summary below but in short we use living human brain slice cultures in a number of different ways to model dementia processes. Big team effort led by myself, @robertmcgeachan.bsky.social and @clairedurrant1.bsky.social rdcu.be/ej647

I cite this in every electrophysiology/methods course I teach: a cautionary tale of how flawed assumptions and methodology can mislead an entire field. Case in point: using 10 mM glucose as the sole energy source in ACSF for neonatal neurons - despite their limited capacity to metabolize it. 1/2

Escaping grant anxiety at Big Sur

Looks like the final nail in the coffin for the excitatory GABA in development, 15 years after the theory was shown to be based on experimental artifacts (at the same institute, no less): “even during the first post-natal days, the net action of GABA is inhibitory, but not excitatory.” 🧠

Our latest work, published in @cellpress.bsky.social, identifies a rare soluble #tau species in human #Alzheimer’s brain that suppresses CA1 complex-spike bursting, a hippocampal neuronal firing pattern that is critical for learning and memory. www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

🧪 The Sjöström Lab in Montreal is looking for a postdoc! We study cortical circuits, synaptic plasticity, and NMDAR signalling using custom 2-photon microscopy and optogenetics. We seek candidates with strong patch-clamp and/or 2-photon imaging expertise, and a relevant publication track record.

Published today in @alzdemjournals.bsky.social! We used connectome-based predictive modeling in autosomal dominant Alzheimer’s to predict tau levels & cognition in carriers years before dementia. There are days in life that shake you. I’m shattered 💔 to share that I just found out that the US Government terminated my 2024 NIH Director’s Early Independence Award (~$2 million), threatening my long-promised assistant professor job at Columbia University & academic career... 1/🧵

New: Energy use shapes brain organization and development. We use gene expression maps from the @alleninstitute.bsky.social Human Brain Atlas to map the main energy metabolism pathways in the brain. Led by @moohebatpe.bsky.social @misicbata.bsky.social @goliashf.bsky.social and Justine Hansen 🧵

New preprint about SWRs, this time in HUMANS! 🤩 With @anna-maslarova.bsky.social and @JiyunShin, from @NYU, we’ve (i) developed a pipeline to analyze SWRs in intracranial EEG, and (ii) created ripmap, an open-source toolbox that allows versatile inspection and curation of events 🧵
