Why do I still get so sad when people in my research area tokenize and then exclude me? Like I should really be used to it by now but it hurts every time.

I have learned that the directors of ALL: PREP, IMSD, and IRACDA programs across the country have received similar cancelation notices. This follows previous cancellations of MARC and URISE programs. This further dismantles the mechanisms that enable scientific training opportunities for SO MANY.

Your daily reminder that just because you can perform an arithmetic operation on some numbers doesnt mean that the result is meaningful in any way.

It is spring break and I already feel behind on getting caught up. How does this happen again?

Maybe people should talk about boycotting the FIFA World Cup unless it moves to just Canada and Mexico. Also Boycott the Summer Olympics or demand a move to a country that is not a banana republic...

We're proud to share that two NITMB members, Niall Mangan and Jermey Hoskins, have been awarded Sloan Research Fellowships! Congratulations Professors Mangan and Hoskins! Learn more www.nitmb.org/post/two-nsf...

Thank you for joining us for the first day of the 2025 Emerging Directions Workshop! We're excited to start exploring emerging research directions, spark new cross-theme research activity, and more!

Math departments teach tons of students. Ever wonder what the balance is between service courses for non-STEM majors, courses for STEM majors, and courses for Math majors? This paper has the answer: 67%, 33%, 5% (of all credits received.) scholarship.libraries.rutgers.edu/esploro/outp...

A lot is happening in US science. Bluesky is the best place to stay up the rolling political crisis in America that is crushing US science. It's also a good place to learn what we all can do. We have a starter pack for this. Please send your colleagues here too. 🧪 go.bsky.app/2K6jTi5

Excited to work with @melanielenahan.bsky.social again to facilitate this learning community!

NIH cuts indirect rates on grants to 15%. This will be the end of American excellence in science. Universities will struggle and many (likely most) will terminate their research programs. Independent research institutions will not be able to survive this. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Here are the options on the table (which are not mutually exclusive): 1. House Dems bring articles of impeachment* 2. Senate Dems play constitutional hardball and obstruct everything 3. State AGs litigate (and prosecute) everything they can 4. Citizens march en mass

From SLMath re summer programming.

Let us see what NSF does with the GRFP...

I won’t equate my or my colleagues’ experiences as academics* with the more vulnerable communities targeted by the Trump administration. But there are some developments I’d like to share as an academic in a red state working at a public university. 1/

The terrible thing about fascists! Is fascists want terrible things! The top consolidates power! Th' opposition just puppets on strings! They're Nazis Nazis Nazis Nazis They want us to die! But the most terrible thing about fascists is... The people who comply The peeeeople who comply

I dont have words to express my dismay at how Trump is targeting trans people with these executive orders. Cis friends, we are all way too quiet about this. Call your reps tomorrow (or leave a message tonight). Donate to organizations supporting trans people. And then be loud about it.

Any law folx out there (professors, attorneys, etc.) looking for someone who has standing to sue the federal govt over the trans youth executive order, I am REALLY raring to do this. Sharing is caring. #LawSky etc.

we did it joe

ABRCMS site is also down. Well it is under review... asm.org/Under-Review

Someone just told one of my students that they cannot write a letter of recommendation for any internships or research opportunities that are DEI related...

NIH Has deleted almost all undergraduate and graduate training programs from their websites. This includes U-RISE and MARC that I am involved in and many others. Not surprised but hard to sit down with students and tell them undergraduate and graduate school funding might not exist.

Look! It's me causing trouble and being preachy! On a free poster! In other news, apparently some people still view me as a mathematician, yay! ebus.ams.org/ebus/Default...

What to do with my children over winter break is bothering me. We are doing lights at the Chicago Botanic Gardens and then watching Home Alone. Beyond that I a have no clue. Maybe ginger bread house tomorrow (I hate those things).

Grades in just in time. What a weird semester. My students like always have been great in general. Personally life has been hell but I here is to hope things get better...

I have missed a lot of class this semester due to illness. For three weeks I have been back in the classroom and today was the last class. I was cleaning my office up after class and I found a card that was from one of my classes saying they hoped I recovered from my illness soon. It was so nice.

Excited to be organizing another workshop at @aimathematics.bsky.social next year on "MetaMath: Modeling the mathematical sciences community using mathematics, statistics, and data science". December 8--12, 2025. Funding is available. aimath.org/workshops/up...
