Our May 2025 Notable Nonfiction title is THE AI CON: HOW TO FIGHT BIG TECH'S HYPE AND CREATE THE FUTURE WE WANT by Emily M. Bender and Alex Hanna! @librarylovefest.bsky.social

Now that we've gotten into the groove on this Bluesky thing, time for a little BP lore! Have you ever wondered how the BookPage editors choose the books we review? 🧵 (1/10)

DOGE is a criminal conspiracy to defraud the people of the United States

Holy shit, just learned that RFK Jr's "Children's Health Defense" website made a fake CDC page with false anti-vax information linking vaccines to autism. They took down the page after the NY Times started asking questions:

Highly disturbing story about DOGE but this detail is particularly chilling www.npr.org/2025/04/15/n...

The top 1% evade $163 billion in taxes per year — enough to end homelessness, hunger, and pay for universal childcare. 👆🏻 This is the crime wave we should be talking more about.

More and more people are ditching their Teslas. Listings just hit a record high—up 70% compared to this time last year.

If you love your library, listen up…

me: i am in fact very normal about middle-earth also me, at any given moment, thinking about middle-earth:

RFK is a murderer and a terrorist

every day is a mental fight between trying to focus on the things in my control and also preparing for the worst-case scenarios, which is exhausting

I want them all unmasked. I want Noem, Homan, and Miller to someday be tried for their crimes against humanity. Ditto for the ICE agents and other officers who abuse innocent tourists, college students, and refugees When all this is over, I want justice. My column www.inquirer.com/opinion/comm...

the republican party must be outlawed from existing in the united states. we cannot live in a civil society with people as inhumanly evil as this

Woof. @joshtpm.bsky.social I covered another Michigan State House coffee hour. Quote from Rep: "“How is this going to end? I do think that there will be a conflict point where there will be either U.S. National Guard or active duty perpetrating violence on American citizens in a direct way..."

The Librarians is a must-see documentary about the recent history of book banning in the US

Anyone who tries to tell you that the GOP is not gutting (notice I did not say *cutting,* but GUTTING) Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid is lying to your face. Not only that, they are effectively telling you they think you are stupid enough to believe it. #MOMSKY

One million Americans died, just a few years ago. Have we learned nothing at all from the calamity?

If an administration can get away with falsifying social security records to target individuals, then there is no bottom. There's also no such thing as a "citizen" because that can be changed with a couple button presses too. Mark your SSN and passport as dead then ship you to El Salvador.

DOGE already has cost tax payers money (at the very least $500B/year in IRS revenues, but that's before other huge costs are accounted for). And as I keep noting, Elon's $150B/year estimate is what some of the IGs who got fired were finding--w/o cutting services.

Two weeks ago I did a thread on how the Founding Fathers declared independence from the crown for behaving literally the same way as the Trump administration. It's getting worse and Americans need to connect today's events to this founding document.

NEW: Blue Cross authorized mastectomies & breast reconstructions at one hospital, then refused to pay the full doctors' bills. BUT... The insurer did make some exceptions. On several occasions, Blue Cross execs signed deals to pay for their wives’ treatment. By @tchristianmiller.bsky.social

Your assignment this week is to read a book that some “Mom for Liberty” would bring to a school board meeting and cry about.

Americans, call your senators to fight against the SAVE Act, y’all. (it requires a passport with your birth name on it in order to vote.) I did. And one of mine is Ted ‘I’m a total skuzbucket’ Cruz.

I used to select Dem primary candidates based on policy. Now I will aggressively try to destroy any Dem who says "we need to look forward not backward" and fervently support anyone who says "I will see these motherfuckers prosecuted and jailed if it's the last thing I do."

Restoring trust and credibility to the United States will require not just pushing Trump out of power but putting him and all his cronies in prison.

The entire CDC lead program has been eliminated. Lead exposure can lead to many issues including anemia & irreversible brain damage in young children. It was <10 years ago we learned that 99,000 people in Flint Michigan had been exposed. If only eliminating programs eliminated the risk.

The U.S. House has passed a bill that voting rights groups have repeatedly warned would make it harder for millions of Americans, including married women, to vote.

Ordinarily, the annual #NationalLibraryWeek does not generate significant attention from political writers, but this year is not like most. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

This is exactly why we need to be organized in our defense of the freedom to read. The book banners are organized & we'll funded. But they are also unpopular. Our numbers can beat their money
