The English education system has become obsessed with phonics. In my opinion, it's an oversimplification of the process of learning to read. Most of us use sight recognition and context to make sense of text far more than we use phonics.

I see how hard GPs work, and appreciate it. This seems to me to be part of the right wing war on the NHS; demonise and demoralise the service, and it will be easier to privatise it.

As a dad of thee adult daughters, I'm guilty of never knowing what to ask for. But I've concluded that the best gift they can give me is to share time feeling relaxed and happy. We're trying to ban any bought gifts at Christmas (birthdays are different), because it just causes stress and expense.
